I think one great line of vinyl collecting is when initial issues of LP covers are changed due to complaints from record company executives, from censors, or from the buying public.

Remember the Beatles “Butcher Cover”? Or how about the Dave Clark Five “No-Instruments” Cover or Blind Faith’s “Topless Girl” Cover? And don’t forget Three Dog Night’s “Nude” Cover and their “Birthing” Cover and Roxy Music’s “Naked Ladies” cover. Replacement covers were issued for all of these original covers.

There are 3 LPs in this auction: 

LP #1:

·       “IF YOU CAN BELIEVE YOUR EYES AND EARS” by The Mamas and the Papas  

·       This LP is Dunhill Records DS-50006.

·       It is a STEREO PRESSING (which has a higher value than the Mono Pressing).

·       This LP was issued in 1966.

·       The LP in this auction is the RARE ORIGINAL COVER (known as “THE TOILET COVER”) that has the toilet completely visible at lower right of the front cover slick.

·       The image of the dirty toilet was found to be objectionable by record company execs, so production of this cover was immediately discontinued.

·       It was replaced by a couple of covers with modifications that are also included in this auction. First, a SCROLL that listed key cuts on the LP was added to CONCEAL the dirty toilet that was visible on the first pressing covers.

·       After that first cover modification, a second subsequent modification to the cover slick added a BLACK BORDER that eliminated the dirty toilet altogether and even eliminated the bathtub, as those same record company execs (or the public) objected to the image of 2 guys and 2 gals in a bathtub TOGETHER (even though they were still clothed!). 

·       The “TOILET COVER” is in VERY NICE VG+ CONDITION with light overall wear. The wear mostly on the corners where there are small corner “pushes” on all 4 corners. THE COVER IMAGE IS NICE and VERY CLEAN!!! The TOILET IS FULLY VISIBLE in the LOWER RIGHT CORNER!!!    

·       The VINYL is in NEAR MINT CONDITION with several very light surface hairlines/scuffs.  

·       This is a 1960s LANDMARK LP! It contains 2 of the Mamas & the Papas GREATEST TUNES: “MONDAY, MONDAY” and “CALIFORNIA DREAMIN’ “.

·       This is a GREAT HARD-TO-FIND LP with its ORIGINAL COVER THAT SHOWS THE TOILET that was CENSORED/REMOVED.

·       It’s a “Must Have” for any vintage vinyl collection.

·       It’s also definitely SUITABLE FOR FRAMING!!!

LP #2:

·       “IF YOU CAN BELIEVE YOUR EYES AND EARS” by The Mamas and the Papas

·       It is a STEREO LP.

·       This LP was issued in 1966.

·       This is the SECOND COVER where a SCROLL that listed key cuts on the LP was added to CONCEAL the dirty toilet that was visible on the first pressing covers.

·       The “SCROLL” COVER is in VERY NICE VG+ CONDITION with light overall wear. There is wear mostly on the corners with a couple of bald corners. The COVER IMAGE is NICE and CLEAN with the SCROLL of song titles covering the toilet bowl. There are small “pushes” on the bottom left corner and top right corner. CHECK OUT THE IMAGES! The cover looks VERY NICE!  

·       The VINYL is in VG CONDITION with a number of hairlines/scuffs.  

LP #3:

·       “IF YOU CAN BELIEVE YOUR EYES AND EARS” by The Mamas and the Papas  

·       This LP is Dunhill Records DS-50006.

·       It is a STEREO LP.

·       This is the THIRD COVER with the second modification to the cover. A BLACK BORDER that eliminated the dirty toilet and the bathtub all together was added.  

·       The COVER is in STRONG VG CONDITION to WEAK VG+ CONDITION with light to moderate overall wear. There is light wear on the front cover slick near the top. Most of the wear is on the bottom and top edges/seams. The cover has light wear on the corners. The cover looks VERY NICE!  

·       The VINYL is in STRONG VG+ CONDITION with some very light surface hairlines/scuffs.  

FYI: I use Goldmine Grading Standards (G for Good, VG for Very Good, VG+ for Very Good Plus, NM for Near Mint, M for Mint) to VISUALLY grade these LPs, so please know the descriptions of these grades before bidding.
