Mance Lipscomb - Mance Lipscomb Vol. 4, Arhoolie Records F 1033 STILL SEALED
Like Leadbelly and Mississippi John Hurt, the designation as strictly a blues singer dwarfs the musical breadth of Mance Lipscomb. Born on April 9, 1895 in Navasota, TX, Lipscomb was a sharecropper/tenant farmer all his life who didn't record until 1960, "songster" fits what Lipscomb did best. A proud, yet unboastful man, Lipscomb would point out that he was an educated musician, his ability to play everything from classic blues, ballads, pop songs to spirituals in a multitude of styles and keys being his particular mark of originality. He appeared at numerous blues and folk festivals throughout the '60s, released several albums on Arhoolie and even one for a major label, Reprise, in 1970.
This fascinating 1967 LP is the fourth in a series of albums Texas songster Mane Lipscomb has undertaken for Arhoolie. Since his first recordings for his 1960 Arhoolie debut, on each passing album release his singing becomes more forceful and his impeccable guitar playing ever more impressive and resoureful. Thanks to Mance's years of playing at country dances, he has accumulated a 300+ repertoire of traditional song, most of it - thanks to his borrowings from other local performers heard in his youth - even older than his age (72) at the time of this recording (57 years ago).
Mance plays traditional, instrumentals and original tunes.
"So Different Blues" is a stunning example of the latter, while among the finer sample o his work in the traditional genre are the beautiful old spiritual "Run, Sinner, Run", the understated worksong-based "Captain Captain", as well as a pair of pieces he learned around 1914 "Farewell" and "Long Tall Girl Got Stuck On Me". The wry "I Want To Do Something For You" is a fine rendition of the ageless courtship-dialogue song. The raggy instrumentals "Mr. Tom" and "A Rag (She Got Good Booty)" recall the sprightly dance music of the backwood country dances Mance played; as does the pop-derived "Keep On Trucking".

Vinyl: NM. Looks like it just came from a retail store and it was opened for the first time. The finish is shiny, with no visible defects. Labels are superb, clean and bright without marks. Spindle shows no sign of wear. And no warps.
