Prized lp produced by Ilhan Mimaroglu with first recordings of rarely-performed experimental works realized by Donald Knaack. Duchamp's visionary proto-Cageian composition proposed a complex method for randomly generating a sound sequence out of a pool of all possible notes or sounds that can be produced on the chosen instrument; it shares its name with a sculpture, a.k.a The Large Glass, that Duchamp constructed during 1915-1923. For this recording, Knaack created a set of 24 unique percussion instruments out of glass including various types of wind chimes, xylophones made out of rods and bottles, tube chimes, and glass maracas. The Cage piece also involves chance operations, some incorporating the imperfections on the paper on which the score is printed, and here is performed on an array of percussions including invented instruments, found objects, prepared percussion, and an electronic tape part that uses a Moog Percussion Trigger and a Moog Synthesizer. This lp is listed in the Broken Music catalog of artists record works and should be of interest to fans of experimental instrument builders like Max Neuhaus, Harry Partch, Bernard and Francois Baschet/Jacques Lasry/Structures Sonores, Harry Bertoia, Z'ev, Skip LaPlante, Robert Rutman, etc.
artist info from album notes etc.:
Cage, arguably the most influential American composer of the 20th century, was known for his innovative use of chance methods, silence, found sounds, and extended playing and electroacoustic treatment techniques on traditional instruments; he studied under Henry Cowell and Arnold Schoenberg, led the New York School of early postwar experimental composers (Earle Brown, Christian Wolff, Morton Feldman), was a contemporary of Karlheinz Stockhausen and Iannis Xenakis, colaborated with Conlon Nancarrow, David Tudor, and Merce Cunnigham, and was associated with the Fluxus 'post-dada' art movement (Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, George Maciunas, Joseph Beuys, La Monte Young, Milan Knizak, etc.). Duchamp was a modern multimedia artist who worked with Guillaume Apollinaire, Francis Picabia, Joseph Stella, Andre Breton, Man Ray, and Max Ernst, and was associated with the Dada/Dadaism, Futurist/Futurism, Surrealist/Surrealism, and Cubist/Cubism movements; his musical compositions have been realized by Petr Kotik and Donald Knaack.
