ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This handsome 4LP box set – a still-sealed copy – from Decca (6.35235, German pressing, label iteration unknown, presumably blue label, stereo, booklet included) features Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields’ magnificent renditions of Handel’s Six Concerti Grossi Op. 3 and the Twelve Concerti Grossi Op. 6 – true gramophone classics. In fact, these recordings were awarded the Deutscher Schallplatten Pries and the Edison Prize.

Both sets were recorded in the warm acoustics of London’s Kingsway Hall, the former during 14-15 February and 23 March 1964 (producer: Andrew Raeburn / engineer: Kenneth Wilkinson).and the latter during 1-3 February and 13-16 March 1968 (producer: Erik Smith / engineers: James Lock, Kenneth Wilkinson, and Alan Reeve).
The harpsichordists heard in the Op. 3 set are George Malcom and Thurston Dart, while in the Op. 6 set Stanislav Heller plays the harpsichord and Andrew Davis the organ.
Wrote critics Ivan March, Edward Greenfield, and Robert Layton in the 2003/2004 edition of their venerable Penguin Guide: “Marriner and his Academy [are] on peak form. The Concerti grossi, Opp. 3 and 6 remain among the finest performances ever committed to disc."
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the still-sealed box is near-MINT. There is dirtying to the laminate, but that is all. The box appears as new – the ideal collector’s copy.
The booklet is unread and still sealed inside the box – a MINT copy.
The condition of the 4 LPs is MINT throughout. These are still-sealed, unplayed copies – ideal collector's copies.
