Description

Test pressings are very limited edition pressings that have simple white centre labels with minimal information. Test pressings are important for a pressing plant, because this is the first time audio material gets transferred to a vinyl format. Vinyl production consists of various stages such as mastering, lacquer or DMM cutting, electroplating, stamper production and finally pressing a record. Various mistakes may occur at different stages and test pressings are crucial in making sure that no errors have been made. 

Some test pressings may become wildly expensive in the second hand market due to their limited quantity. Sound-wise, an approved test pressing should not differ from a regular pressing in any way.  They lack the artwork of the finished product, and are usually housed in a generic inner sleeve, with, typically, the catalogue number handwritten in a corner. 

This is a one-sided (side A) test pressing of Arena, cat. no. TRA 230, a rare prog rock LP by Marsupilami, produced by Peter Bardens and released by Transatlantic in 1971. Labels are white except for ‘STEREO’ stamped on one label. It clicks at every revolution on the run-in groove. This is a characteristic flaw of long-lived test pressings, because of the tiny bit of rim exposed by the inner sleeve. Thereafter it plays perfectly. Side B emits only an electronic tone.
