Description
RARE Marvin Gaye debut LP, 1964.
Sincere apologies for the condition of this sacred LP (please see photos). If it's any consolation, it was like this when I purchased it in 1983. Up until I played it for inspection purposes prior to listing, the LP has spent the good part of 35 years stored away, un-played, safely on shelves.
Item details - This is Marvin Gaye's debut LP from 1964. It's the FIRST PRESSING on the Stateside label UK on Stateside. Mono recording. Printed by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd..
(It appears the LP was never reissued in this format and image).
LABEL: Stateside (SL 10100)
Stamped Matrix / Runout (Label side A): SRX.3201
Stamped Matrix / Runout (Label side B): SRX.3202
YEAR: 1964 (UK)
VINYL CONDITION: VG. There are several wispy hairline marks on both sides. That said, the vinyl has retained some sheen. There is mild crackle throughout but nothing overwhelming. There are no skips, jumps or fry-up level hissing. The whole record plays through with clear vocal and instrumental output and still provides an enjoyable listening experience. (Please remember, this LP hasn't been played in over 35 years so there's still substantial life in it, yet).
LABEL CONDITION: VG. Still readable but with several sleeve insertion marks (see photos 4 and 5).
ALBUM COVER CONDITION: Poor to Fair. The first owner, a 'Terence Whelan' (presumably the first) was likely to have been an excitable, young teenage mod and subsequently wrote his name in pen, repeatedly, all over the album cover. This was common practice in those days as it deterred theft or accidental pick-up at parties. The said first owner also inscribed his favourite songs and musical artists of the time (see photos 1 and 2). There is a 6 inch parting on the spine (see photo 9). There is a 6 inch parting on the top edging (see photo 6). There is a 2 inch parting on the bottom edging (see photo 11). There is a rip/tear to the centre of the cover's official opening (see photo 10). Both top and bottom right hand corners have slightly parted.Despite the awful report, the cover still retains the record securely.
*With care, this cover could easily be repaired.
Yes, this LP looks a state (no pun intended) but are seven reasons why you should bid on it (if you don't already own one) - 1. It plays through cleanly with a very decent sound output.
2. It's rare. 3. It'll serve you well until you, eventually, find an EX+ or NM copy (which will set you back a minimum of £300). 4. The cover could be repaired.
5. It has a bit of original 60s British mod history literally written all over it.
6. The auction price starts at £19.99 - so you could be in for a bargain! 7. The cover may have very little in the way of a spine...but the vinyl has the 'soul' of Marvin!
