Description
For many years I did promotion for music labels, large and small, and have accumulated product not only from labels I represented but labels I competed with as well. Understand this was not a collection as such; it was the residue of what I did for a living. These discs were not stored in air tight lockers of kept in a temperature controlled clean room, they were in boxes in my office and although they may have never been removed from the dust jacket please expect dust and even some light scratching. Others have survived the passage of time in excellent, never played condition. From 1961 we have for a no reserve auction a unique, lightly played copy of Marvin Gaye’s, debut Tamla Records single release “Never Let You Go” 2:42 b/w “Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide” 2:49, catalogue # 54041. In retrospect based on his huge later successes, both as a performer and his many contributions to the success of the Motown organization, it hard to believe his first offering for the label never made the Billboard R&B or Top 100 charts. There are a few things about this particular copy that I feel justify my use of the words collectible and unique. All my searching for information on this disc, including conversations with friends who worked for Motown at that time, indicates that the “A” side of this disc was the “Conscience” side. On this disc, that label is commercial Yellow in color, but the flip side label on “Never” is White and marked “Disc Jockey Advance Copy” and makes it appear that this is the “A” side. Were the mismatched labels intentional or was it a pressing plant one off? Vinyl has a nice gloss surface, labels are excellent without notations and disc has been stored in a “green-stock” sleeve as well as a heavy vinyl sleeve.
