Description
Mary Asquith - Closing Time - LP. Condition is "Used". Dispatched with Royal Mail 2nd Class.
Mary’s first recordings were made with The Savannah Jazz Band and released in 1977 on the Macclesfield based Tradition label. The following year, the Middleton (Manchester) based singer released what was to be her only solo LP and what a good one it is.
Mary seamlessly blends folk and acoustic blues and her smoky voice made her one of the best in this field. On the album, she is backed by a full session band that included sax wizard, Barbara Thompson. I’d urge anyone to take a listen to the version of Dylan’s, “Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues” that closes side one. Mary’s stellar vocals high in the mix over some tasty bottle neck guitar courtesy of Simon Prager and tremendous sax from Barbara. One of the best Dylan covers ever made in my opinion.
In contrast the title track which closes side two has the 3am and you’re the last one propping up the bar, vibe. Was this song autobiographical? Was it prophetic? Who knows, but the story of “the kid,” a singer who missed the breaks could easily apply to Mary. As with Janis Joplin before her and Mary Coughlan in later years, her life was to be blighted by troubled relationships, a lack of self-confidence and a fondness for the bottle.
If you have never heard Mary Asquith, do yourself a favour and spend half an hour on YouTube then buy the album. You wont regret it.
Sadly, Mary gave up singing in the 1980s, apparently never convinced of her own talent. She died in 2009 after losing her battle with cancer.
