Some Notes On Record Grading

98-100 = Mint (M) Record vinyl looks shiny, original sheen, no scratches or surface marks, absolutely perfect in every way. Certainly never been played, possibly even still sealed. Should be used sparingly as a grade, if at all.

90-97 = Near Mint (NM or M-) Record vinyl looks shiny, original sheen, spindle hole looks seldom used, no scratches, may have a couple of minor surface marks that are difficult to see and are not audible during play. A nearly perfect record. Looks as if you just removed the shrink wrap from a new record. May have a couple of soft ticks or pops. Near Mint is the highest price listed in all Goldmine price guides.

80-89 = Very Good Plus Plus (VG++) or Excellent (Ex) Record vinyl looks shiny, has original sheen, slight surface scuffs or light wear up to 15% of the record. Record was played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. All but the most mint-crazy collectors will find a Very Good Plus Plus record highly acceptable.

70-79 = Very Good Plus (VG+) Record vinyl looks shiny with original sheen, may have fine line marks from sleeves in spots across the surface, or many fine lines from record changer usage. May have a couple of very light scratches causing soft ticks and/or pops, as noted, which do not cause an adverse audible disruption.

60-69 = Very Good (VG) Many of the defects found in a VG+ record will be more pronounced in a VG disc. Surface noise will be evident upon playing, especially in soft passages and during a song's intro and fade, but will not overpower the music otherwise. Groove wear will be noticeable as will light scratches that will affect the sound. Generally worth 25 percent of the Near Mint value.

The Grading Process: I visually grade the record in good light. I play-grade the record by spot checking several areas, especially areas that have marks. I listen using Grado SR325 headphone w/Grado headphone amp, on a Well Tempered Turntable & arm, mcz Grado cartridge. These are very revealing headphones allowing me to hear any surface noise, although from a close-in perspective. Your experience may differ depending on your system. I clean the record if needed to determine the general condition. Most will improve with your preferred cleaning method.
