Description

Dutch Philips A 00150-53 L, first purple label 4-LP box set, with booklet, mono only. JS Bach's Mattheus Passion, performed by ao. Karl Erb, Willem Ravelli and Jo Vincent, with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Amsterdam Toonkunst Choir, and the Boys Choir "Zanglust", conducted by Willem Mengelberg. Other great names performing are Hubert Barwahser, Piet van Egmond and Louis Zimmermann. A legendary performance, from start to finish. Fantastic condition, and completely original. All original inner sleeve are there! Before they switched to the dreaded plastic-coated paper envelopes (residue, and sometimes even chemical reaction with the vinyl.....), Philips used brown paper bags, with "Philips Minigroove" printed on it, that had a separate soft paper wrapper inside; it's all here, and in M- condition. The records have very light hairlines from sliding in and out of the sleeves, they look and sound VG++, mostly vinyl induced sounds. It's incredible to hear the almost completely quiet lead-in groove on side 1 then starting to produce very light tape/equipment hiss, and then Mengelberg, ticking twice on his music sheet stand, after which the music starts. Spine chilling. The box has corner wear, VG, but upgradable with some repair work; I leave that up to the buyer. Very rare, in any condition.
