This is the big one. This is the original Mercury Living Presence Stereo (RCA-pressed) masterpiece from the late 50s, not the Classsic Records reissue from the mid-nineties.
The stampers are FR1/FR1 (the storied RCA Indianapolis plant).
Both sides honestly, conservatively, rate MINT. There aren't even any spindle trails anywhere that I can see. No scuffs, marks, nothing. This is still as totally fresh as the day it was packaged and shipped by Mercury (to some record store to be priced at $3.95 or so).
I believe the one time I played this record (under a low-hour Shelter 901, tracking at less than 2 grams) may be the only time this vinyl ever sat on a turntable. It is that pristine.
The original Mercury paper sleeve is correct and crisp, no tears or stains. The LP now resides in fresh rice paper sleeve, then inside the paper Merc sleeve.
The jacket is likewise like new. No tears, dings, stains, fading or anything but sheer mintiness. Its glossy finish is flawless.
I will try to answer your questions. I am not a record merchant or an expert in rating the condition of used vinyl. But I do recognize a flawless LP when I look at one carefully, closely, and over and over again. And that's what I see here.
Like I said about the Starker/Bach Cello Suites vinyl on another of my auctions right now ... I keep challenging my impressions of the superb condition of this LP ... but I'm starting to get gun-shy about pulling the vinyl out for yet another once-over. I'm not afraid I'll find a flaw ... just that I may cause one!
I'd prefer that the next person who inspects this be its new owner.
Final note: the picture software has lightened the true maroon color of the labels. Have no doubt, this record proudly wears the correct classic dark M.L.P. maroon!
