The insert on the Korean version shares some insight on the content of the album and its careful curation of tracks highlighting the Black-occult context of the album and Mercyful Fate’s approach to the first-wave of black metal. The translation reads:
"IN THE SHADOWS" cover features impressive illustrations depicting the motifs of the album's features: trees—an old oak, a headless knight, and a possessed girl—contains carefully selected tracks that musically express supernatural mystery. These include (Egypt), which praises the great power of the Egyptian gods Osiris and Nanubis—the cradle of paganism and the belief in resurrection that prays for eternal life beyond death; <The Bell Witch>, inspired by a true event in Tennessee (the sudden possession of a 12-year-old girl); <The Old Oak>, the song of the gallows oak, which possesses a mysterious power to induce suicide and grows richer with the blood of the dead; <Shadow>, which discerns the duality of humanity as good and evil, light and darkness; <A Gruesome Time>, a sudden flash of fear; and <Thirteen Invitations>, which draws its subject matter from a European legend (in which a 13th person suddenly joins a card game and wins everyone, only to be revealed to be a devil who eventually takes the lives of the participants). <Legend of the Headless Rider>, an epic trilogy about a cursed knight who awakens on Hallows' Eve forever headless to guard his estate; the instrumental <Room of Golden Air>, featuring an impressive acoustic intro; <Is That You, Melissa>, an anthem to Melissa and King's eternal motif; and the magnificent <Retum of the Vampire... (1993)>, a remake that can be described as a 1993 version of a classic from his M.F. days, featuring guest appearance by Radz Ulrich—the tracks are... only in our dreams or in our secret memories
You can explore the forbidden world you have been ruminating on.
