Baron Elmo proudly presents a vinyl prize for fans of maverick folk shaman MICHAEL HURLEY: Snockgrass, first issued in 1980 by the Rounder label, reissued in this later edition nine years later, now out of print in all formats. Since the early Sixties, which saw his first recordings on the Folkways label, "Snock," as Hurley is affectionately known, has plotted his own slow course, cutting the relaxed, bluesy, slightly off-center and utterly charming folk music he's known for to this very day, often taking years off at a time. Snock has turned out a fairly generous stack of releases over the last half-century, each one tinged with his special flavor of genius, and Snockgrass is no exception. This LP fills out the Snock sound with a larger cast of supporting players then usual, with a vibe that's a bit more accessible without dimming our man's muse in the slightest -- making this an ideal introduction to Hurley's magic. Snock himself sounds as feisty and bent as ever, his weed-and-wine-cured folk always a pleasure to hear. Like kindred spirits the Holy Modal Rounders, Hurley's musical tools are blues, folk, and country, but he's not a traditionalist by a long shot. A visionary eccentric, Hurley combines surreal nature imagery with quirky, impossibly organic-sounding poetry, loopy existentialism and wacky humor. His loping, deceptively simple song structures and penchant for old-timey sounds and styles lull the listener into a false sense of security until the lyrics arrive to throw everything gloriously off-kilter. Such is the process by which Hurley enchants, and Snockgrass is nothing if not enchanting, featuring one delightful song after another. His always amazing cover art -- a staple of Hurley's releases -- completes the package. Don't miss this chance to score a definitive piece of the Snock puzzle!
