Description
"Miles" aka "The New Miles Davis Quintet" / Prestige, PRLP 7014, 1956, Mono, Rudy Van Gelder /
A mono original: the first issue with the true green cover, "Prestige LP 7014" to the upper right corner, yellow/black fireworks deep groove label w/ the "446 W. 50th" address and "Quintet" misprinted as "Quartet"; etched in the grooves "RVG PRLP-7014-A" and "RVG PRLP-7014-B". A 1956 original, no doubt about it.
VG+ record in a VG sleeve. Details: The record is FLAT. The sides are clean and glossy, although marked by previous play with roughly a dozen hairlines to each side, nothing worse. The sides have been play graded and generally sound great: there is some soft static in spots, some soft ticks as well, but these are quite discontinuous and there are sizeable stretches (e.g. all of A3) which are clean and entirely unfettered. In short, you'll hear some light noise at times but nothing abrasive or harsh, and such surface noise as there is never prolongs to the point of irritation. The labels are bright and clean but a close look will reveal touches of swindle swipe around the hole. The holes themselves are entirely undamaged. No original inner sleeve, the record is now housed in a Nagaoka anti-static. The ORIGINAL outer sleeve is VG. The front is bright and clean with just a touch of lightening or sunning at the left edge. The rear has ring shadow and a pen mark ("WII") to the upper right. The edges are rubbed, especially at the corners. At the top edge there is a 1 1/2" split at the left corner, a 2 3/4" split at the right corner. The label edge has incipient splits at the corners and heavy rubbing. The bottom edge has patchy rubbing and an incipient split at the right corner. However, the sleeve feels very solid despite these woes.
Some viewers may find this copy of "Miles" suspiciously familiar. It is indeed a recently auctioned copy which found its way back to us. Buyer returned it without explanation (and was refunded, naturally), and we can only presume that our grading/assessment of the record failed to satisfy him. I've reviewed our listing and reinspected the sleeve and record. Additionally, I've given the LP a full second listen. I'm still solidly inclined toward our original grading of VG+/VG, though I can see how a very, very conservative grader might only award the LP a VG. In any case, I've complemented our listing with a full set of sound files (grabbed at random from each track and edited no further than to normalize the waves). Warts and all, you'll be the judge. N.B.: probably advisable to lower your system's volume, at least at first.
