MILES DAVIS WITH STRINGS / Prestige, PRLP 7025, 1956, Mono (Hi Fi), Deep Groove, Rudy Van Gelder
A 1956 mono original: deep grooved yellow and black firework labels with "446 W. 50th St." to labels and sleeve, etched deadwax reading "RVG PRLP-7025-A" and "RVG PRLP-7025-B".
A VG record in a VG+ Don Martin designed sleeve. The sides are clean and glossy, A having about a half dozen hairlines, B having fewer (and some paper scuff) but two of the hairlines are slighty palpable. Playgraded from end to end: A1 starts with light static, contains some muted ticks and soft crackle; A2 and A3 sounded, to these ears, quite clean and free of noise; B1 has light static, some one-off light ticks early and then a pattern of light ticks which becomes somewhat louder and mildly intrusive as the song progresses; B2 has some light ticks and clicks; B3 has the same but this is as bad as the side gets with a short lived pattern of ticking toward the middle (like raindrops on a car hood during a thunderstorm); B4 and B5 have light crackle, nothing worse. Still, if the B rates a VG, the A is a very solid VG+. The labels are clean and bright, but both have visible spindle swipe, heavier at the B than at the A. Original inner lost, replaced with a Nagaoka anti-static. Original outer has a touch of ring shadow to both sides but the front remains bright and appealing while the rear is just slightly diminished by a touch of spotting at the right edge and an ancient price-sticker at the upper left. The corners and edges are mildly (top) to moderately (label edge) to significantly (bottom) rubbed and there is a 2" split at the middle of the lower edge. Even so, a quite sound and solid sleeve. LP weight: 144-145g.
