Description

Up for auction is my Columbia 6 eye white label promo copy of "Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis. This copy has very early stampers, side 1 has XLP47324-1D, and side 2 has XLP47325-1G in the dead wax. I am pretty conservative in my ratings and I personally care more about the audio quality than the visual quality, so I tend to give a lot of information about the audio quality after carefully listening to both sides. For side 1, I rated it as a VG++, very clean looking only has two small marks, neither is feelable like a scratch would be and they are not audible. There is some low background noise for the first 40 seconds of "So What" (this song has a very quiet intro) and then the music kicks in and is very clean and clear with little to no noise floor in the background. There is some low noise in the dead wax between the three songs, but that is it, when the music is playing I don't detect any background noise. There are three scattered tics across the whole side, very low in level and they do not detract from the music. The second side I would rate as VG+, there is a 1-1/2" thin scuff that extends between track 1 and track 2 (There are only two tracks on side 2). There is also another 3/4" thin scuff on the other side of the record that also extends between track 1 and track 2. In either case, the scuffs are not feelable, and they are so shallow that I would not call them scratches. In listening to the tracks, for track 1 "Flamenco Sketches", there are 3 tics than can be heard between 6:49 and 6:50 of the track, they are low in level and do not detract from the music. On the second track "All Blues", there are a total of 8 repeating tics that are split between two sections, from 1:34 - 1:42 and 1:54 - 2:08. There are also 6 repeating tics than can be heard from 2:45 - 2:54. There are also four more tics later in this track. I call these tics, they are not loud pops, they are low in level and the music is much louder than the tics, so again they do not detract much from the music. The labels on both side are nice and white, no spindle marks, or stains or scratches, there is a little darkening where the circular grooves from the record itself show a little bit of light darkening, please see the pictures and you will see how nice they are. The outer record sleeve is structurally sound, no splitting of the spine or edges, the worst part is the top edge, there is chipping that runs across the top of the cardboard, again please see the pictures. The front panel has a relatively light amount of rubbing in a circular pattern where the record labels would be, the back panel has a little bit of age darkening and some staining in a vertical patch about 1/2" wide next to the spine that goes about 2/3rds up the panel. Overall its a very acceptable outer sleeve and is attractive. The inner sleeve is nice and white, a little bit of age darkening around the edges, there is a 2 inch split on all three sides of the inner sleeve and wrinkling and a small 1/8" tear at on of the upper corners. Despite the litany of all the flaws, overall this is a very nice sounding and looking copy of a landmark record in the Miles Davis catalog and is fairly rare. I will ship for free via USPS media mail only to the continental United States. No reserve, just a very reasonable opening bid. Good luck and happy bidding!
