VERY BEST!
Nathan Milstein was unquestionably one of the great volinists of this century. In fact, most agree that his solo Bach Sonatas and Partitas, recorded in the 50s by Capitol, were landmark achievements. Today, a near mint set will easily go for three or four hundred dollars.
Funny thing is, Mr. Milstein took great pride in staying in playing shape, and, as a result, played phenomenally into his 80s. Others agree that he did play better and better and better, no doubt about it, but strangely in that, his recordings stopped. Why? In his own words, he hated---no, "abhorred" is more like it---recording standards that demanded corrections be spliced-in by phrase or, heaven forbid, even by note.
That is why this set, done by DG years after the Capitol efforts, are so noteworthy. Performing at his best in his view and many others, he was simply allowed by the DG to correct anything at all not to his liking by picking up anywhere in the music he deemed necessary. So, yes, he would back up, way-y-y back, and approach the correction as he gathered feeling and power and settled back into the piece. That pleased him. And, it will please you.
To the point, he himself said:
"…I think the Bach Sonatas and Partitas I recorded for Deutsche Grammophon in London actually are clearly superior to the set I did in the '50s. There is nothing in my repertoire that I don't play better now than I did before, and it is especially gratifying to be able to record these works under today's technical conditions."
This offer is the three-record deluxe boxed set of the Sonatas & Partitas of Milstein, and it is in delightful shape. Laminated box is without fault, crisp. Booklet is enclosed and perfect. And the three records -- German pressings -- are as clean as the day they were made. Near mint without question.
Is it true: When it comes to the solo works of Bach on violin, nobody touches Milstein?
(You got my vote.)
