Wave the Ocean, Wave the Sea: Field Recordings from Alan Lomax's "Southern Journey," 1959–1960 Test pressing of 2010 LP on Mississippi Records
This is a one-of-a-kind test pressing of Wave the Ocean, Wave the Sea: Field Recordings from Alan Lomax's "Southern Journey," 1959–1960—an LP in Mississippi Records' Alan Lomax Archive series, released to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Lomax's "Southern Journey." The proper album is itself out of print.
Rather than a proper LP sleeve, this came to me in a white paper sleeve sandwiched between two 12"x12" square cardboard cutouts. The "front cover" features an original pen drawing by one of the folks at Mississippi in Portland (I'm guessing Eric Isaacson). The back is mostly empty but in the bottom-right corner somebody wrote "Thank you - test pressing." You can see these in the accompanying images. I'm sorry they're a little blurry; I'm not a wizard at digital photography.
The LP has never been played, so it's essentially mint. I don't how to "grade" the cardboard, exactly, but they don't have any major marks or stains or tears or folds or anything. So let's say NM.
The record features the same music as was on the proper release of this LP. As the subtitle suggests, they are all field recordings by Lomax, and hold an enormously important place in the history of folk-music recording. On his so-called "Southern Journey" Lomax was accompanied by English folk-music powerhouse Shirley Collins. On this disc are some of the first recordings by the blues genius Mississippi Fred McDowell. The music is varied between blues, old-timey country, vocal harmony groups, shape-note singing, black gospel, white gospel….
