Description

This is the original 1967 UK mono press, with the rough orange CBS labels, the finger gesture and airbrushed flag on the cover. With the earliest A-1 B-1 matrices and A-2 A-1 stampers of the very first copies pressed.

The first album by Moby Grape, was recorded at the CBS Studios, Hollywood from March to April and released in June 1967. The band had formed in San Francisco in 1966 when drummer Skip Spence & manager Mathew Katz were sacked from Jefferson Airplane. Katz persuaded Spence to form a new band. Spence, Peter Lewis & Jerry Miller all played guitar and sang harmonies with drummer Don Stevenson and bassist Bob Mosely. This was a new sound combining multiple guitars with close harmonies, similar to what Buffalo Springfield were also doing. The band appeared at several festivals soon after its release, such as Monterey, but the relationship with manager Matthew Katz was starting to break down....

  The Upton Printing Group front laminated sleeve is intact & in VG+ condition, with some light corner/edge wear and some laminate rubbing/creasing on the front cover and some light storage rubbing, with a sticker scar on the rear cover. The spine is intact and fully readable and the CBS orange company inner is slightly creased & in EX condition.   The record is in visually VG+ to EX condition, with a few faint sleeve removal hairlines and one or two light needle scuffs & marks visible on each side and some light bag scuffing on both sides. The labels are in EX condition, clean & bright with evidence of a few faint spindle markings on each side.   The sound reproduction is EX, still clear & precise throughout with no definately no skips, sticks or jumps, but there is some brief low background noise during the run in grooves and briefly in a couple of the quieter passages.
Overall, a really great, loud & clear listen, that plays great.   The matrix nos. are; BPG-63090, A-1 stamper A-2, B-1 stamper A-1. This is one of the very first few hundred copies of the 1st pressing of the original 1967 UK mono issue of this album!
