This beautiful LP from RCA Victor (LCT 1127, US pressing, gold label, mono – no stereo edition exists) features legendary pianist Benno Moiseiwitsch’s magnificent renditions of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in G Major Op. 44 (edition Alexander Siloti) and Rachmaninov’s Piano No. 1 in F-sharp minor Op. 1

The former was recorded with conductor George Weldon and the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall on 28 August 1944, while the latter was set down with conductor Sir Malcolm Sargent and the Philharmonia Orchestra at EMI Studio No. 1, Abbey Road, London, on 23 December 1948.

Needless to say, Moiseiwitsch is wholly inside the soundworlds of both composers. This is playing from a bygone age, rich and glittering – landmark recordings in the discographies of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov.

Incidentally, the memorable cover portrait of Moiseiwitsch was executed by Oppenheim. There are informative liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in English only.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. The only flaw barring a NM grading concerns a 2” split to the lower edge and some light aging. Otherwise, the album remains extremely attractive – solid, bright, the artwork a lovely juxtaposition of color and typesetting – overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is VERY GOOD+. Though there is light surface noise throughout, in general the playback remains quite fine. However, those wanting a flawless or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as a very good collector's copy.
