The original UK vinyl release of Monty Python's The Monty Python Matching Tie and Handkerchief is a legendary collector's piece famous for being the world's first "three-sided" record.  Released by Charisma Records on December 7, 1973 (Catalog Number: CAS 1080), it used physical tricks and clever packaging to intentionally confuse and delight listeners.
The 3-Sided "Double Groove" Gimmick The defining feature of this vinyl record is its unique mastering:
  • Side A plays completely normally.
  • Side B is multitracked with two parallel, concentric grooves cut into the same side. [1, 2]
  • Depending on exactly where you drop the record needle, it will catch one groove or the other, playing an entirely different set of comedy sketches. [1]
  • To maximize the joke, both sides of the record label are printed as "Side Two". There are no tracklists on the center labels to hint that a third side even exists.

Gallows-Humor Packaging The original 1973 UK jacket is an elaborate, die-cut sleeve designed to look like a three-dimensional product box.
  • A small window cutout on the front displays a bright, colorful graphic of a matching tie and handkerchief.
  • When you pull the inner sleeve out of the jacket, it reveals the full illustration: the tie is actually a noose around the neck of a man hanging from a gallows.
  • It originally shipped with a green three-column insert instructing the owner on the "uses" of their new tie and handkerchief

This original 1975 UK vinyl release of the album was mastered and cut by "Porky" (George Peckham), a legendary British lacquer-cutting and mastering engineer with a reputation for the best sounding albums of the time -see photo. Peckham was famous for etching cryptic messages, jokes, and his signature phrases into the "dead wax" (the runout grooves) of records he mastered.

Unlike most eBay UK market albums which cost $25-$50 to ship, mine ship from Texas not UK and are NOT SUBJECT TO IMPORT TARIFFS - so no nasty extra tariff invoice from the shipping company before they will deliver!

Photos are of actual record.

I was a club DJ during the 1970s and 1980s in the UK, and always bought the latest LPs as soon as they were released.

I moved to California in 1995 and then to Texas in 2012.

My entire 2000 plus treasured vinyl collection followed me around the world and has been meticulously stored upright in a climate controlled environment for the last forty years or so.

I recently decided to let my fantastic and eclectic collection go and you will find many highly desirable and collectable records that you will be proud to own and play for yourself.

All my records come with a brand new clear plastic outer cover for long lasting protection.

While you are here, why not check out my other rock, pop and soul R & B vinyl records? - I will gladly combine shipping on multiple items if you ask before buying.
