As the dawning of the Age of Aquarius expanded the flower-power generation's fascination with astrology, composer Mort Garson launched "Signs of the Zodiac", a 12-volume series of cosmic musings on each individual star sign that remains one of the most ambitious and bizarre projects ever initiated by a major American record label. Realized in collaboration with Paul Beaver on a variety of electronic instruments (including the then-new Moog synthesizer) and with voice-over narration by Cyrus Farrar, the albums effectively anticipated new age music by roughly a decade, creating deeply contemplative and otherworldly soundscapes rich in mood and portent. Cancer is the fourth sign in the zodiac and a symbol of family and domesticity - Garson's compositions are suitably fuzzy and emotional, indulging Beaver's sweeping space-age romanticism in full while Farrar's dramatic readings elucidate the deeper mysteries of humankind.
