Impossible to find still-sealed first mono pressing of this classic audiophile experimental music lp, with essential New York School works and a beautiful art cover by abstract expressionist painter Franz Kline (earning it an entry in the Broken Music catalog of artist record works). Feldman's sidelong Durations is a series of 5 small chamber ensemble pieces in which "each instrument is living out its own individual life in its own individual sound world... In each piece the instruments begin simultaneously, and then are free to choose their own durations within a given general tempo." Brown's works also involve elements of chance, indeterminacy, and graphic notation, and were partly inspired by the mobiles of Alexander Calder; Brown aimed to achieve "the construction of units and their placement in a flexible situation which subjects the original relationships to constant and virtually unpredictable but inherent change." Performers include David Tudor, David Soyer, Philip Kraus, Don Butterfield, Matthew Raimondi, and Don Hammond. This album was issued as part of Time/Mainstream's highly regarded Contemporary Sound Series, which was produced by Earle Brown and showcased the works of experimental composers like Iannis Xenakis, Luigi Nono, Luciano Berio, Sylvano Bussotti, Charles Ives, Olivier Messiaen, Franco Evangelisti, Bruno Maderna, etc.

Morton Feldman studied under Wallingford Riegger and Stefan Wolpe and was influenced by Scriabin, Ligeti, Cornelius Cardew, and Mauricio Kagel; he became a key member of the New York School of experimental American composers (John Cage, Earle Brown, David Tudor, Christian Wolff), was one of the first composers to use graphic notation (a technique influenced by his many close friends in the visual arts such as Mark Rothko, Philip Guston, Franz Kline, Jackson Pollock, and Robert Rauschenberg), and he also pioneered the use of indeterminacy. Earle Brown studied the Joseph Schillinger method of composition under Brogue Henning and is known for his use of graphic notation, improvisation, and open form in his scores. Tudor studied under Stefan Wolpe, Irma Wolpe, and William Hawke, collaborated with artists Robert Rauschenberg, Lowell Cross, Carson Jeffries, Bill Viola, and Viola Farber, and as the foremost American experimental keyboard interpreter worked with John Cage, Earle Brown, Morton Feldman, Christian Wolff, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Mauricio Kagel, Sylvano Bussotti, and Pierre Boulez.
