Description
This is a very nice copy of Classic Records 180g pressing of the Mercury Living Presence recording “Paul Paray Conducts the Music of Chabrier” with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Paul Paray on 4 single single-sided 180 g. 45 RPM records. The 45 RPM set is from the complete original recording SR90212-45. The flyer that came with the original Classic 33 rpm release (not included with this 45 issue), states that these Classic/Mercury releases were “Produced, musically supervised and 3-to-2 channel conversion for LP by Wilma Cozart Fine. Mastering Engieer for LP: Bernie Grundman. Only ORIGINAL MASTERS used for transfer to LP”. My assumption is that these statements also apply to the 45 issues that Classic did of the 6 Mercury releases. When I first bought this new, the records were cleaned with a VPI record cleaner and treated with LAST record preservative. More recently it was recleaned with Audio Intelligent Fluids on a VPI cleaner and on an Audio Desk ultra sonic record cleaner. It has also been demagnetized with a Furutech DeMag.
Disk 1 has some streaks in the vinyl which might be some superficial abrasion but the side plays very quietly with only 3 light ticks noticed. Side 2 has 2 parallel ¾” and 2 parallel ¼” light scratches at the beginning of the side. This results in some occasional very light ticks. I noted 11 light ticks in the area of these scratches. For the remainer of the side, I noted an additional 14 light ticks. The side plays mostly very quietly in spite of these occasional ticks. Side 3 has no scratches, scuffs, or streaks and noted only 1 tick over the entire side. Side 4 has no scratches, scuffs, or streaks and plays mostly very quietly with 13 light ticks noted over the entire side.
I have only played the record a few times on various VPI tables I have owned (HW-19 MKIV, TNT 3.5, and Classic 4) using either Lyra or Benz Mico Ruby cartridges. The sound is naturally open and detailed. The cover is a plain white jacket with a sticker containing a small picture of the original jacket with the track listing as originally issued by Classic. There are no seam splits or ring wear, but the lower right corner of jacket 1 and 2 has some very slight compression. Only side A of each LP is pressed. Side B is blank. Multiple records can be combined in an order to save shipping costs.
