Grading Information (or On The Varieties of Vinyl Grading)
Mint/M : Don't use it. Don't know what it means. I don't even know what is could possibly mean. (See "Still Sealed" condition below)
Near Mint/NM+ : A nearly perfect record. Will appear unplayed. Absolute collector quality.
Near Mint/NM & NM- : Still a nearly perfect record, but the vinyl surface may have limited scuffing or imperfections that are visible when the record is closely examined under a bright light. These imperfections are typically the result of the inner sleeve and/or dust rubbing against the record surface. Because such scuffing does not reach down into the record grooves, sound quality is not affected. Still collector quality.
Excellent/EX+ : An excellent and well cared for record. May shows signs of having been carefully played. Surface marks are limited (though more extensive than near mint) and are visible by a casual examination when the record is held under a bright light. Should still be collector quality for 99% of collectors.
Excellent/EX & EX- : Still an excellent and well cared for record. Blemishes are more extensive but still do not reach all the way down into the grooves. Some of the surface wear may be visible when the record is held at an angle under normal lighting. EX will satisfy most collectors and very picky listeners. EX- will satisfy more casual collectors and picky listeners.
Very Good/VG+ : Surface wear is becoming visible when the record is looked at head-on in normal lighting. Sonic quality is starting to be mildly degraded, though a VG+ record will still satify most listeners. The very outer edge of collector quality. Audiophiles should keep looking.
Good Enough/VG : Surface wear is obvious when the record is looked at head on in normal lighting. Sonic quality is degraded and may be distracting at times but will still satisfy most casual listeners. Audiophiles should keep looking. I do not bother to list most records in this condition, except in cases of rare/unique titles or collectible cover art.
Passable/VG- : Heavy surface wear. Sonic quality is heavily degraded. The only real requirement is that the THE RECORD SHOULD STILL PLAY THROUGH. For a visually graded record, this means that the record may have numerous "scratches", but they cannot be felt when you run your finger over them. Records are only listed in this condition when they are especially rare or unique, or have collectible cover art.
Still Sealed/SS: Just what is says. The record has never been opened and is still sealed inside the jacket by the original shrinkwrap. Does this record meet that elusive and exclusive grade of MINT?
The long answer: The record was likely pressed in a factory with the goal of producing as good of a product as cost controls would allow. Hence, no one might have cared if some of the records coming off the line had slight surface blemishes, as long as they sounded good. After pressing. the record was likely slid into a paper jacket whose surface, on the microscopic level, is slightly "gritty". And who knows how the record was shipped or stored after that. The bottom line: It is unlikely that the sealed record you buy from a used record dealer could have been significantly damaged without also damaging the outer cover. But that still doesn't mean you can saw its mint.
The short answer: Who cares? You aren't planning open up that sealed copy of Exile on Main Street and playing it, forgodsake?
