Label Conditions: Both in stunning condition: ultra clean, super-fresh and highly attractive with just a couple of very faintn spindle traces, but look hard. One of rock’s most beautiful labels and this pair does them supreme justice.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 137 grams. Above average weight for year of issue.

Rarity: Very scarce: and this one has, for me, the much rarer smooth-finished cover, and it looks fantastic. Also this is the very first example of this I have heard with NO pressing issues. Every copy prior I had neard prior to this, have had pressing rasps and distortion on the final songs of each side. This has NONE, and plays as close to perfect as this album ever will. A beautiful ‘PORKY’ / ‘PECKO’ copy pressed by EMI, this sets the standard for the more discerning listener. I also have never seen a smooth-finished cover for this album either that was still made by the E. J. Day Group, so this a rare variant of the terribly wear-prone textured version. Still prone to wear of course, this has little and both record and cover will prove massively difficult to find better for looks, and especially sound.

Brief Info: A Scottish hard rock band fronted by the powerful vocalist Dan McCafferty. This was their self-titled debut and what a treasure it is too. It failed to cause much attention and failed to sell at all when issued. First pressings are highly elusive and even harder to find without pressing flaws and unwanted sounds. Available for a very short time on the Pegasus label before being repressed in 1972 on Peg. As stated further up, this has the smooth finished cover with the Pegasus logo, number and E.J. Day manufactured and still matt finished, I have not seen this before. This 1971 mini-classic has some stunning songs included and none better than the sublime ‘Morning Dew’, co-written by Bonnie Dobson and Tim Rose, one of my favourite songs of all-time and Nazareth’s rendition is truly superb. For me, the very best Nazareth album ever, this is now becoming highly sort-after, especially on the magnificent Pegasis label which is becoming harder to harder to find. This is a wonderful copy with a highly attractive cover with hardly any wear and what appears to be a hardly played record. Prior to this, I had yet to hear any copy of this record devoid of some crackle and distortion on the final songs on each side, this one has none. All those wonderful vocals fully focused, clean and sharp, importantly devoid of those nasty pressing rasps this album seems to always have. Both ‘Red Light Lady’ and ‘King is Dead’ play as cleanly as the rest. Both inner band songs are massively intolerant of heavy tracking old stylus and the sound simply goes and can actually be unlistenable. Have no fears on this copy, it is by some distance the best I have ever heard (or seen come to that). This is likely to prove a massive upgrade for those who own a copy with the usual pressing flaws or heavy usage this album always seems to attract.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): and by some distance the best I have ever seen. This a very scarce variant of the textured version, but still quite flimsy. A single, very matt cover with smooth surfaces, I have never seen one of these before. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group as per the textured version. This a little less prone to wear and this beauty looks fantastic. I would think this version was only printed in very small numbers prior to the shiny later version when issued on the Peg label.

Cover Front: Exceptional: and no exaggeration. Very clea, almost as fresh as new and highly attractive. Barely even a hint of grubbiness, ageing or rubbing with any creases minuscule. This is still made with very thin card and although not quite as fragile as the more common textured version, this still delicate but will not suffer the wooliness of the other. The lack of ring wear from a fairly heavy record inside all these years is almost remarkable. By a distance, the most attractive front for this cover I have ever seen.

Cover Back: The back is pretty much the same as the front, just fine pinch lines near the top edge probably in manufacture. The lack of ring wear again is unsual as is the absence of rubbing and grubbiness. This is truly exceptional and few will even get close whatever format card they were made with.

Top Edge: Straight and unworn.

Bottom Edge: A tiny rub trace near the right corner tip. The centre may looked rubbed, but NO, that is part of the graphic.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with no wear worthy of mention and guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way. The lack of thickening or burring is again remarkable. The record enters on this edge and removal without wear to this edge very difficult, thus it reitterates the fact this record has hardly ever been removed and probably not seen light-of-day for decades.

Spine and Text: Apart from the odd trace of gentle compression to an already thin edge, this is little short of as made with all text perfect and unrubbed. Again this is exceptional.

Corners: A tiny tip rub to the bottom right tip, that apart, all others as made with near mint pointed shape retained with no dinks or creasing worthy of note.

Cover Summary: At last, one that can be held and appreciated for what it is. A very clean and attractive and delicate cover that truly does come to reminding of new. I have never seen a matt smooth version of this cover and it has to be rarer than the standard textured version. This has been cover-protected from new and the difference is clear for all to see. This significant variant ‘Day’-printed cover should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: MINT(–): the plain white solid unlined inner is included in super shape. Barely any creasing and still very white and unaged. The old adage of a clean inner means a clean record definitely applies here. Mild record impression and all edges unsplit with no repairs. Even any darkening of the seam adhesive is bordering on minuscule, they hardly get better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a superb copy that is very clean with a lovely shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. Any surface traces or hairlines are tiny, very faint and few as seen with utmost scrutiny under bright angled light, this has hardly ever been played, of that, I have not doubt whatsoever. It will please most-all collectors and is could prove and massive upgrade for many – especially as it plays as good as it looks – and few ever will from my experience.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This wonderful record even exceeds its visual grading for most all and thus far, offers the very best sound I have ever heard from this Pegasus album. Sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registers and there are NO – YES NO – pressing flaws or unwanted sound. The very first example I can really state to be the case. The sound pleased me immensely and knowing this album well enough to know it usually offers distortion to those last songs each side. ALL other copies I have heard have done so, and mostly with considerable distortion or pressing ‘rasps’ to those stressed louder parts. Most collectors will know the noise I mean, it is very unpleasant and makes the listener cringe. Their absence on this superior pressing was a total revelation, I truly though all copies would have them. With delicate strings and intense sound, few will avoid issues. The majority will not avoid often clipping and sound degrading, just one play on an unworthy deck will spoil these critical songs. Here, both play beautifully with NO clipping or stressing. I cannot reitterate enough just how intolerant this album is to over-use or abuse on heavy tracking equipment. I truly played this copy thinking it almost impossible not have that teeth-grinding noise and distortion, but hey, NONE. All tracks play superbly well and I am almost loathe to let this one go. This copy will prove MASSIVELY difficult to matchm let alone find better on Pegasus, a label that can be variable in quality. Musically, equally strongly recommended, this is a mini classic. My LP12 takes no prisoners and sometimes it can almost be too revealing – it simply tells the truth – all the wonderful things embedded into vinyl are made wonderful as well as anything bad (but nothing even remotely bad on this copy). A delightful album that, given all the facts on rarity and fragility merits my highest possible recommendation. My best ever example and by some distance too, that’s both record and cover, the sublime ‘Morning Dew’, ‘Red Lady Light’ and ‘King is Dead’ never sounded better to this listener – do NOT lose this one.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
