Label Conditions: Both very clean, ultra fresh and highly attractive with barely any spindle marks on side one (flying horse side) and only light on side two. These are faint and hardly show. One of rock’s most beautiful graphic labels for sure.

Cat Number: PEG-10.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 143 grams. Above average weight for title and era.

Rarity: Quite rare as first pressing on Pegasus, later repressed on the Peg label. The books massively undervalue this elusive album, but that is no real surprise is it?

Brief Info: Scottish hard rock band fronted by the powerful vocalist Dan McCafferty. This was their self-titled debut and what a treasure it is too. It failed to cause much attention and failed to sell at all well. First pressings are highly elusive and they do not come any earlier than this prized 1 G / 1 G copy. Available for a very short time on the Pegasus label before being repressed in 1972 on Peg. The cover was also changed, this original is ultra flimsy, soft, thin and fragile, few are seen even a highly respectable VG. Those that surface are often shredded, very grubby and torn with deep, ugly ringwear. The PEG cover was more robust and protected. This 1971 mini-classic has some stunning songs included and none better than the sublime ‘Morning Dew’, co-written by Bonnie Dobson and Tim Rose, one of my favourite songs of all-time and Nazareth’s rendition is truly superb. For me, the veryt best Nazareth album ever, this is now becoming highly sort-after, especially the elusive first pressing which is becoming harder to harder to find, 1 G’s for this, and any album using this system are hugely elusive. This is a wonderful copy with an attractive cover and very clean record. I have yet to hear any copy of this record devoid of some crackle on the final songs on each side, this being my very best one yet with little unwanted at all. Most-all copies offer significant distortion on ‘Red Light Lady’ and ‘King is Dead’. Both inner band songs are massively intolerant of heavy tracking old stylus and the sound simply goes and can actually be unlistenable. This has minimal traces of anything unwanted and is, by some distance the best all-round copy of this title I have seen or heard – not quite perfect – but it will take an almost unplayed copy to better it. Truly, this is a magnificent album with some truly sublime songs, early Nazareth is quite different to the more hard rock they later made.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High++ and near impossible to find with little wear.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and by some distance the best I have ever seen One of the most flimsy and lightweight covers of it’s era. A single, very flat matt cover with textured surfaces and made with very soft card that is highly prone to wooliness and every form of wear known. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group.

Cover Front: Exceptional: and no exaggeration. Very clean and attractive and retaining an unusual freshness. Minimal traces of any grubbiness or rubbing with any creases few and faint – one near the bottom edge and a light thumb-crease near the right edge, both have modest visibility. The lack of ringwear from a fairly heavy record inside all these years is almost remarkable.

Cover Back: The back is pretty much the same as the front, if anything, better still. The lack of ringwear again is unsual as is the absence of rubbing and grubbiness. Any rub traces present are confined to the very edges, but these are few and very faint indeed.

Top Edge: Very faint rub traces, most of this surface is white anyway so any present barely even register.

Bottom Edge: Very light and faint rub traces, possibily the least you will ever see on this perilous resting edge. There are NO tip-ins on the cover at all.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, reasonably sharp with little wear and no feathering and guaranteed untrimmed. Slightly thickened in places but with no burring, such soft card is massively prone to becoming ragged, even tatty but this one has resisted well. Almost an achievement to find this edge devoid of tears too. Record enters on this edge and removal without wear to this edge near impossible. I truly feel this record has not made the trip out many times.

Spine and Text: Any mild rubbing appears mostly on the white areas which is clearly good news as it shows little and my first ever to not have any noteworthy wooliness. The majority black areas show only very faint rub traces. Solid, unsplit with only some near unavoidable, but here very minor compression. More good news: the ultra fragile text is practically fully intact with any character rubbing very tiny and minor. Indeed the word ‘NAZARETH’ in the centre (arguably the most fragile area), is fully present with no wear.

Corners: Light tip rubbing only, two are white anyway, so again, nothing really notices. Any rubbing to the bottom black ones is very modest indeed and I reitterate again, there are NO tip-ins. All retain very fine shape. With cover this soft, many are seen rounded with erosion.

Cover Summary: At last, one that can be held and appreciated for what it is. A very clean and attractive and immensely fragile cover. I guess one day a perfect one will show, but I cannot hold my breath that long. In the meantime, this super example with more than suffice. One attractive enough and offering so little wear to be of interest to most-all collectors I would think.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): the plain white unlined inner is included in super shape. This is solid with no open windows, it has barely any creasing with just one tiny tone spot. Mild record impression and all edges secure with no repairs. The only clues to it’s considerable age is light glue browning on the seams that few inners escape.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a super copy that is very clean with a lovely shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. Very few marks on these playing surfaces, any present are very fine and faint and without any doubt, this rare 1 G / 1 G ultimate first pressing has hardly ever been played. It will please most collectors I feel sure.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This wonderful record even exceeds its visual grading for most all and thus far, offers the very best sound I have yet heard from this Pegasus album. Sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal with just three clicks noted on ‘Morning Dew’. A tiny, very stubborn fragment had become attached which (initially) meant three quite loud clicks. I (VERY carefully and patiently) removed this, so now the clicks are far more muted. NO use of fingernails, but a tiny dot of purified water applied and left to soften for 10 minutes and it came away. Overall, the sound pleased me immensely and knowing this album well enough to know it usually offers distortion to those last songs each side. ALL other copies I have heard have done so, and mostly with considerable distortion to those stressed louder parts. With delicate strings and intense sound, few will avoid them. Most-all will not avoid often heavy clipping and sound degrading, just one play on an unworthy deck will spoil these critical songs. Here, both play very well with any clipping or stressing VERY minor indeed, just the odd faint trace which is superb news for those wanting this album to listen too and enjoy, not just to own for owning’s sake. I cannot reitterate enough just how intolerant this album is to over-use or abuse on heavy tracking equipment. I truly played this copy thinking it almost impossible not have that teeth-grinding noise and distortion that I actually considered could be a pressing issue as it always seem to be present. When both songs played with minimal traces at all, it was a delight. I am not saying it’s pristine perfect, but it could be as close as they ever realistically get. This copy will prove MASSIVELY difficult to find significantly better for sound as a genuine very first issue on Pegasus. Musically, strongly recommended, this is a mini classic. For audio quality, well it simply depends on the sensitivity of the equipment used to play this one. My LP12 takes no prisoners and sometimes it can be too revealing – it simply tells the truth – all the wonderful things embedded into vinyl are make clear as well as anything bad (but nothing bad on this copy). A delightful album that, given all the facts on rarity and fragility can be strongly recommended. My best ever example and by some distance too, that’s both record and cover.

Now one of the most established sellers on Ebay and still offering the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
