Label/Format: Peg (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both have moderate or less spindle marks, these only show with angled viewing. The original female owner, ‘Maggie’, put her name on wide one only along with a date 26.6.72. This is visible on my scan but is relatively faint and neat. Side two looks lovely with no blemishes of note.

Cat Number: PEG 14.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 134 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Brief Info: Scottish hard rock band fronted by the powerful voiced vocalist Dan McCafferty. This was their second album, their first gem over almost universally overlooked on issue. This faired only slightly better and is also elusive. Only when supporting major acts like Deep Purple did they eventually gain success and from then on became quite successful. This is a lovely album and fine copy, clearly well cared for and carefully played.

Cover Grade and Format: EX+ an unlaminted gatefold format. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group.

Cover Front: Clearly wear-prone, this front looks exceptionally clean and attractive. A tiny and minor sticker pull near the top edge but little else to fault of note. A couple of faint surface creases near the bottom corners being critical and a faint one on the spine edge, but that’s about it. Fresh and attractive with no grubbiness or other marks.

Cover Back: Faint surface trace marks under light, that apart, the same as the front in all respects. No ringwear which is very unusual. This retains a vintage and original ‘Record Chest’ (Chippenham Road, Harold Hill) pre-decimal price sticker with a price of £2-0-8. Although this is a 1972 record and decimal currency was introduced in 1971, many shops still displayed LSD prices well after and during the transitional period so customers knew what they were paying in the new money. This sticker has never been removed or tampered with that will immediately obvious to any winning bidder.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Minor surface trace marks, but almost too small and few to mention (but I have anyway). Both faces looks lovely.

Top Edges: Both look almost like new: both thick and robust, straight and unworn.

Bottom Edges: Very faint rub traces only.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with no wear or feathering, guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: A superb spine and clearly vulnerable being unprotected. Solid, straight, with no compression. Folded square, both right edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn and any rubbing tiny and faint.

Corners: Tiny tip rubs only and all retain lovely pointed shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this fragile 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This exceptional item should please many, if not most collectors. Record includes its original plaiin white unlined inner sleeve which was also signed Maggie 26.6.72. This in fine condition with just a neat bottom edge split and light creasing.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX with a few light surface marks and odd hairline with no sound. There is one small pressing mark on ‘In My Time’ that has dozen light clicks, this being the only blemish of note on the whole album that plays exceptionally well. A super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy played a few times but it appears carefully and on good equipment as there is no sound degration at all. Visually a super record that should please many collectors. If the very small press mark, which cannot even be felt, is an issue, do not bid.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This super PEG record plays even above its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. I have mentioned the very small surface blemish that emits a dozen or so very light clicks, but this has nothing else to fault on what is a very clean pressing. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Devoid of other surface sounds and no other pops or clicks were noted. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played modestly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Barely anything spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, a tiny few gentle clicks are difficult to avoid on every record this great age. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
