Amazing !!! An unbelievable piece: What we have here is an unheard-of TEST PRESSING of this classic Neil Young album. While many test pressings often have alternate or demo- versions of known, later released songs, and while it is possible that this particular test pressing contains demo or alternate versions of some of the tracks, please don’t take our word that it does: unfortunately, we are not familiar with the entire album (we know only a few songs) and we regret  we cannot provide any competent information on how different this TEST PRESSING may be from the official release. Please contact us if you have any questions. The generic white test pressing label is (almost) entirely blank and without any details whatsoever.

The album comes with the neatly typewritten album data sheet (which also serves as a revision log) which contains all the details of the test pressing, including artist name, producer name, song titles, timings, assigned catalog number, scheduled date of release, list of revisions made thus far, performer credits, etc. However the generic test pressing label is mostly blank.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS TEST PRESSING APPARENTLY NEVER HAD A CUSTOM COVER;  THE ALBUM WILL BE SHIPPED IN A PLAIN, GENERIC [WHITE] CARDBOARD COVER. . TEST PRESSINGS ARE RARELY – IF EVER – FOUND IN CUSTOM (STOCK) COVERS.

Following the 1973 Time Fades Away tour, Neil Young wrote and recorded an Irish wake of a record called Tonight's the Night and went on the road drunkenly playing its songs to uncomprehending listeners and hostile reviewers. Reprise rejected the record, and Young went right back and made On the Beach, which shares some of the ragged style of its two predecessors. But where Time was embattled and Tonight mournful, On the Beach was savage and, ultimately, triumphant. "I'm a vampire, babe," Young sang, and he proceeded to take bites out of various subjects: threatening the lives of the stars who lived in L.A.'s Laurel Canyon ("Revolution Blues"); answering back to Lynyrd Skynyrd, whose "Sweet Home Alabama" had taken him to task for his criticisms of the South in "Southern Man" and "Alabama" ("Walk On"); and rejecting the critics ("Ambulance Blues"). But the barbs were mixed with humor and even affection, as Young seemed to be emerging from the grief and self-abuse that had plagued him for two years. But the album was so spare and under-produced, its lyrics so harrowing, that it was easy to miss Young's conclusion: he was saying goodbye to despair, not being overwhelmed by it.

Neil Young recorded this gloom-and-doom masterpiece in late 1974, just as he was recovering from the serious illness. In addition to overcoming personal challenges of all kinds, he also reflected on this album a host of social ills that affected America circa Watergate era. This is one of the most respectable Neil Young albums, which ostensibly he himself chose not to make available in any format, until about four years ago. The result: this great album has become one of the rarest albums in uncle Neil’s entire output. The songs are: Walk on - See the sky about to rain - Revolution blues - For the turnstiles - Vampire Blues - On the Beach - Motion Pictures - Ambulance Blues.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

(c)           The album comes with its original typewritten track listing and credit sheet

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

COVER : This reference pressing comes without any custom jacket, and will be shipped in a plain, generic, white cardboard cover with typewritten Warner/Reprise data sheet affixed to the front panel (not separately gradedm but in decent condition overall).
