Neil's groundbreaking debut solo venture after leaving the Buffalo Springfield
This First Press release used the Haeco-CSG encoding system. This technology was intended to make stereo records that would "fold-down" properly on mono record players . This version was withdrawn 9 months after its initial release and contains four tracks in a different mix and the whole album in an entirely different mastering. The later pressings (with "RE" in matrix numbers) were re-released without Haeco-CSG processing. The words "Neil Young" were added to the album cover after what was left of the original stock had been used up, so copies of both mixes exist in the original sleeve. Copies of the original mix are now rare and sought-after, because many Neil Young fans believe that the remix diminished the songs, especially "Here We Are in the Years".
Initial sales of the album were dismal; it's estimated that less than 10,000 Reprise Warner 7-Arts label copies sold through 1969 (including initial sales of the revised version). Neil also started to have second thoughts about the mixes of "Here We Are In The Years", "What Did You Do To My Life" & "If I Could Have Her Tonight" and decided to re-do them. None of these remixes are an improvement over the originals, especially the "HWAITY" remix suffers from its botched-up and shortened ending.
The sonic differences between US versions of the original and RE-1 are quite huge. The revised version has since become the standard version used on vinyl and the original and the remastered CDs, making these original mixes quite rare and highly prized, even as they are inherently low-level mixes that may require a louder volume setting to appreciate their full sonic qualities.
