Label/Format: Argo (part of the Decca Group) - a very distinctive yellow and silver format. This label would not scan due to the reflection from the shiny silver ink.

Label Conditions: Both very clean and highly attractive with only a couple of light and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Cat Number: DA 104.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 141 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: Moderately rare: Argo records are elusive and rarely surface and this would have only sold in very low numbers with almost certainly low pressing numbers.

Original Year of Release: 1969 making this is a somewhat late mono pressing.

Brief Info: A beautiful copy of a rare late 60s folk gem and superbly recorded with immense detail in mono. If guitar and banjo-picking folk music is to your liking, it hardly gets better than this. The two male members are American and teamed up with Janet Kerr, an English girl when visiting the UK. Their style of music is from the Great US Depression, the music of the rural society and was not overly commercial. A class act on the rare and highly collectable Argo label, a small specialist off-shoot of Decca that specialised in this genre. With only limited sales potential for the connoisseur folk market, these were hardly mass-produced with limited runs thus their elusiveness. Both cover, record and insert are in fantastic condition and the album plays with pristine perfect sound. A great find and a highly enjoyable listen featuring the talents of Tom Paley, you will not find this album often and possibly never in better condition that this. One for the serious folk collector.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: High.

Cover Grade and Format: I would be loathed to grade this beautifully preserved cover less than Mint(-). A very flimsy and delicate thin card single format. The front is laminated and this wraps around the spine edge for around half an inch on to the back. A smooth back with no flipbacks. Printed and made in England by Graphis Press (a new name for me).

Lamination & Front: Superb, and looking little short of ‘as-made’. Incredibly the laminate is practically fully adhered and on such thin card, this is little short of remarkable - no noteworthy lifting or blistering at all, the finest of fine strips on the very edge of the spine only (but look hard). Ultra clear with barely any traces of friction rubs or dulling and a very attractive semi-gloss finish suits this cover well. Hardly a significant crease or mark to be seen and even record indentation is light and faint. Genuine freshness and attractiveness is retained and try to find this better - I seriously doubt it.

Cover Back: Again in amazing condition, clearly protected from new, this back has aged little. A mere trace of darking on the bottom edge but this is as clean as practically possible given its 40-years-old. Few marks and barely a crease to be seen and no ringwear either. The laminate end is ultra clean with no grime-line formation and again fully adhered and shiny. I can only tip-my-hat to the original owner for looking after such a delicate cover all these years so perfectly - truly a connoisseur’s piece.

Top Edge: Unworn.

Bottom Edge: One small rub, again look hard.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no wear or feathering. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Fragile but again looking practically as new: Solid, straight, uncompressed. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: All crisp and neat with no dinks or rubbing or note.

Cover Summary: A supreme all round example of this very fragile late 60’s cover, one that will prove very difficult, well nigh-on-impossible to find much better. This beautiful item should please all collectors, even the real connoisseurs wanting this elusive album.

The Inner: The vintage Decca-style inner is EX with just one corner crease and some edge glue darkening. The polylining is still firmly attached witih a lovely neat clear window and no edge splits.

The Insert: Apart from what appear a couple of faint smudges or mild finger marks, this is also practically as made. Happily grade it Mint(-). Most-all clean and unyellowed with neat crisp edges and no splits or tears - both folds are very strong and unstressed. A large double folded sheet with blurb on the band, songs and the lyrics and an essential part of this rare set.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-), A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed on high quality Decca-style vinyl. With a smoothed rim and thick pressing, this will immediately apparent this Argo record is part of Decca. Just ultra fine surface trace marks under light and a copy hardly even played on all the evidence. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This fantastic ‘lost’ folk gem plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Even devoid of surface sounds and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing, but as you would expect from any Decca pressing. Unfortunately few mono records will survive quite in this condition, we all know what so many were subjected to from old heavyweight thick (often worn) needles from that era. This has not only survived the period, it simply excels with pristine ‘studio’ quality sound and it will remind those of a certain age what these record once sounded like from new. Few copies will even match this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will also prove near impossible to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. A gorgeous piece of the folk collector.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
