_____ Shortly before the formation of The Jazztet, tenor-saxophonist Benny Golson and trombonist Curtis Fuller teamed up for this quintet set with pianist Ray Bryant, bassistTommy Bryant and drummer Al Harewood. Although Golson contributed three of the six songs ("Blues After Dark" is the best-known one), the emphasis is on his playing; the tenor is quite heated on the uptempo blues "Jam for Bobbie."

_____ AT the end of Summer in '06 I saw Benny Golson's current Quintet at Yoshi's Sushi Restaurant and Premier Jazz Club, here on the West Coast. Located in the heart of the Bay Area, Oakland CA is home to YOSHI'S truly world-famous Jazz Venue. After the Sunday matinee show I stood in a short line to meet, and hopefully get Mr. Golson's autograph on about  The coolest story Mr. Golson shared with myself and a few others as he signed my LPs was about his teen years growing up in Philadelphia. He was playing alto sax at the time, and so was his neighborhood friend John Coltrane. Mr. Golson's mother had opened their home to his peers that were also musicians, so they would have a place to visit and rehearse together, staying out of trouble as well.
Mr. Golson's Mother would stay upstairs often in the afternoon hours, but she'd always make an appearance whenever John stopped by, if he had his alto sax with him. "Why did she always come downstairs when John stopped by?" I asked.
He answered that mother didn't just come down to greet the young men, & see how their day was going. "Oh no, she had a request that one of her favorite songs be played for her, from start to finish." he said.
Then continuing, "She would always ask the quiet one that leaned in the doorway, 'Do you have that horn with you today?' he would hide a smile and answer, 'Yes Ma'am.'
Then he paused and smiled at us, as we all anticipated what was next. "She would then ask him to play 'Summertime' for her, like she had never heard him play it before."
His eyes grew bright, and his face shared an enthusiastic smile when He said she used to remark that, 'Johnny knows how that song feels. And when he blows his horn, I get to feel it too.'
.....A man, a moment, and a story that I'll never forget.
