Description

NIC JONES: Penguin Eggs, UK Topic 12TS411 1980 first pressing on the Topic label. The greatest of all the seventies folk singers and guitarists, Nic Jones' career was cut tragically short by a terrible car accident that left him partly paralysed and unable to play guitar. A tragic loss, because Jones combined the driving guitar picking of Martin Carthy with the sweetest of voices. Penguin Eggs, Melody Maker's Folk Album of 1980, took the folk revival to new heights of excellence. It has such vitality, and his guitar arrangements have such contemporary feeling, that the appeal of Penguin Eggs stretches beyond the folk constituency. Jones' albums tend to have a cumulative impact: they start off intense and grow and grow. Penguin Eggs is the pinnacle of his achievement.
