The Artist

Nina Hagen: some compare her to Pippi Longstocking, others view her as the first worldwide star from Germany since Marlene Dietrich. She is probably, since the great Hildegard Knef passed away in February, 2002, the last great diva the Germans have left. Who says she is a child of circumstance is probably right. In a few short words: born into a family of artists, divorced parents, Wolf Biermann, Stasi, and the tight corset of the DDR; then phenomenal success with her hit: »Du hast den Farbfilm vergessen.« Any more questions?

It was almost inevitable that Nina Hagen should throw off her chains as soon as she was able to leave the socialist state in 1976 and fling herself into the freedom of West Germany. She also flung off the taboos and moral prejudices of her fellow citizens. Alluding to the album by the heroes of British punk, The Sex Pistols, she planned to release a rock musical called »Anarchy in Deutschland.« Although she never completed the album, Nina raged across Germany and the rest of the world like a whirlwind. She continues to do so today – especially in this book!

The Book

»That's Why The Lady Is A Punk« explores Nina Hagen's personal history. Illustrated by a wide range of pictures, documents, letters and drawings, this book tells her story. It starts when Nina was just a gal who loved riding her roller skates in the Prenzlauer Berg district of East Berlin and goes on to tell of her revolutionary success with the Nina Hagen Band and her enlightenment in the Far East. Nina has accomplished a lot, but she is just as good at tossing her achievements aside and starting anew.

For this reason, this book is the story of many beginnings. The reader learns about Nina's first acquaintance with Wolf Biermann, her first love story, her first LSD trip, her first encounter with God, her first concert, and of course, her first big hit. Not forgetting her first time in the "promised land" of the West, her first visit to London, her legendary concert at the Quartier Latin in Paris, her first golden record, the big bang, her first UFO, the birth of her first child, and her first visit to India. This wonderful book is a book for those who love stories - stories told by fans and friends of Nina's, by musicians, by colleagues, by lovers, by skeptics, and critics, and of course, by Nina herself. The Authors

Nina Hagen, born in 1955, has been involved with the pop industry for a quarter of a century. She had her first hit, »Du hast den Farbfilm vergessen,« in 1974 in East Germany. Her status in the business, coupled with her originality, are as unrivalled as is her shrill unpredictability. The »enfant terrible« of the German music industry has released over a dozen albums. Marcel Feige was born in 1971 and works as an author in Berlin. His main focus lies on lifestyle, music, film, and literature. 1. First of all, every single image had to be retouched very carefully to achieve maximum image quality and clarity, so months of work went into the preparation of the book. 

2. The book is printed on excellent heavy double coated art paper with a hard back. The print is only in four colour / duotone, allowing for splendid colour results. The binding is solid and substantial.

3. The format of this book is unusually large – 9.5 x 11.8 inch. It is a very heavy volume indeed, opulently presented. 

4. Only a couple of thousand copies of this book have been printed. This is a very small print run indeed. However, this book is aimed specifically at die-hard fans and not at the general public.

5. No paparazzi photography has been used for this book, instead the rights for all the images were purchased from the photographers directly. Thus, only official photographs were used. Of course, this also contributes to the expenses.

Q: Is this an official book by the artist/s?
 
A: No, this is not an official book by the artist/s, it is not part of the merchandising either and is not related to the artist/s or the management in any way whatsoever. It is, however, an official book by the photographer. The photographs were taken only in official circumstances, e.g. at personal studio sessions, at the artists’ homes, live or backstage, sometimes at public occasions or other engagements. Furthermore the book contains a score of rare pictures that have not been published anywhere else before. Out of respect for the artists no paparazzi photographs have been used, neither any pictures lacking respect for the artist in any other way. This was one key principle of the photographer’s choice of pictures. The copyright for the photographs included in this book lies with the photographer.

Q: Is this book exclusively available on eBay only?

A: Yes, you will only be able to purchase this book on eBay. You will not be able to buy it in regular bookshops. This book is distributed on eBay only, because it makes for a much better deal for everyone involved.
