This is probably the most personal album that Simone issued during her stay on Philips in the mid-'60s. On most of her studio sessions, she worked with orchestration that either enhanced her material tastefully or smothered her, and she tackled an astonishingly wide range of material that, while admirably eclectic, made for uneven listening. Here, the singer and pianist is backed by a spare, jazzy quartet, and some of the songs rank among her most socially conscious declarations of African-American pride: "Old Jim Crow," "Pirate Jenny," "Go Limp," and, especially, "Mississippi Goddam" were some of the most forthright musical reflections of the Civil Rights movement to be found at the time. In a more traditional vein, she also reprises her hit "I Loves You, Porgy" and the jazz ballad "Don't Smoke in Bed."

Nina Simone in Concert beautifully captures the awesome talent and verve of Simone in action. All sides to her artistry are present here. The somber and tender performances of "I Loves You, Porgy" and "Don't Smoke in Bed" show the fine precision in which she can execute a vulnerable vocal delivery. "Plain Gold Ring" has Simone revisit a song from her debut, Little Girl Blue, while adding a slow-burning tension that was far less prominent (if existent at all) in the original recording.

"Go Limp" is a light-hearted and comedic effort about the civil rights movement and sexuality. She gleefully bounces through the song making the audience erupt in occasional laughter and applause, egging the audience into singing along with her in the choruses, and at times laughing off forgetting the words to parts of the song.

The album culminates to the closing number, "Mississippi Goddam". The fast-paced, intricate, and lively song has her singing briskly about the racial injustice in the United States at the time. The dark lyrics are highly contrasted by the show-tune aesthetic of the overall song but are perfectly married by Nina Simone's rapturously emotive delivery

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  (WEAK) NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)         The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)         The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(d)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(e)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
