VINYL DOUBLE LP
The Downward Spiral was Nine Inch Nail’s second long-play release, issued in March of 1994. It came at a time when CDs ruled the world, and vinyl released were nearly extinct… except when a label wanted to make a point and stir up some early interest in a new release by a key act. Then they’d press up a very limited quantity of the new album on vinyl, and ship it out to some tastemakers about two weeks before the official CD release.
This double LP by Nine Inch Nails is one of those deluxe packages. It’s said that only a few thousand were pressed up and that is verified by a news item I spotted.
A note in Billboard Magazine back in April 23, 1994 explains why the Lp on vinyl is so scarce. “A spokesman at Interscope Records says that the Nine Inch Nails’ new ‘The Downward Spiral’ was shipped early on vinyl, but it wasn’t for commercial sale, it was for promotion. The label sent out about 10 pieces each to about 300 different retailers, but, according to this spokesman, some retailers decided to sell it for $40-$50 apeice.”
