Nino Ferrer - "Métronomie" (1971)
Regarded by Nino Ferrer as his first proper album, Métronomie was released to critical acclaim but sold very poorly at the time...
Loosely concept album, it included four tracks from his previous Italian album Rats and Roll's, re-recorded with French lyrics ('Métronomie', 'Cannabis', 'Les enfants de la patrie', 'La maison près de la fontaine').
Unlike its parent album, this last track was a great success, with 500,000 units sold in less than a year.
'La maison près de la fontaine' was a jazzy tune inspired by a Louis Armstrong's trumpet solo and was Ferrer's most enduring success...
But the album, blending prog-rock, jazz, rhythm & blues and funk, long instrumentals and stomping rockers, was a real masterpiece.
With its warm music, surreal and nevertheless actual lyrics about freedom and ecology, this release stood as a inventive piece of work in the French musical landscape and sounds still, to this day, like a modern record...
1. Métronomie (9.05)
2. Les Enfants De La Patrie (4.55)
3. Métronomie 2 (2.18)
4. Cannabis (4.43)
5. La Maison Près De La Fontaine (3.43)
6. Isabelle (2.29)
7. Freak (1.28)
8. Pour Oublier Qu'On S'Est Aimé (3.27)
Determined now to conduct his career as he alone saw fit, he took up residence in the Quercy region in the South West of France and began breeding horses. But music remained his first love and his meeting with Englishman Mickey Finn, a guitarist who had played with T. Rex, Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones, changed his attitude towards his work. With Finn, Nino launched into rock music and began to write darker, more personal lyrics.
1972 saw the release of the "Métronomie" album, considered by Ferrer to be his first ‘real’ album. Very much in the style of the time, the album was conceived as an ‘experience’, with the music accompanied by sound effects, but included a new version of his very first release, "Pour oublier qu’on s’est aimé". However, it was not the album which sold but one of its tracks, "la Maison près de la fontaine". Very different from the rest of the album, the single sold more than 500,000 copies. I think this is a really great album."
