Description

Early Rock N Roll - Group 45

by the NITE RIDERS

Record Label: SUE

Record # 713

Titles: Pretty Plaid Skirt (And Long Black Sox) b/w I’ll Never Change

Condition: NEW - DEALER STOCK and has NEVER BEEN PLAYED

This recording was originally issued on the Sue Record label in June of 1959. Being that I usually deal only in Doo Wop recordings done in the 1950's group harmony style, I had to search the Internet to find out some background information on this record.

One of the first things I found was that an original first pressing of this record on Sue, is extremely hard to find, as it appears that very few were pressed. The record here on auction is a Collector’s Pressing - Reissue - Repro.

It appears that the Nite Riders had their beginnings around 1949, and that they recorded numerous records for a wide variety of labels - much too many to list here. (Search the Internet for "Nite Riders" for a complete list. Here’s a bit about the group:

The Nite Riders consisted of

James "Doc" Starkes - bs/tb,

Melvin Smith - vcl/bar.sax,

Harry Van Walls - pno,

Harry Crafton - gtr/vcl,

Joe Sewell - ten.sax

Jimmy Johnson - dms

Before forming this group, all the members had played in several studio sessions and

some of them had also done solo recordings. Van Walls had appeared on numerous Atlantic r'n'b-hits since the late 1940s (Ruth Brown, Joe Turner, Sticks McGhee, Joe Morris, Clyde McPhatter & The Drifters, The Clovers etc.), and Harry Crafton had worked

with Doc Bagby, The Jive-Tones, The Sonotones and The Craft Tones. Joe Sewell had recorded with Tiny Grimes' and Harry

Crafton's Orchestras, and Melvin Smith with Clyde "Blow Top" Lynn & his House Rockers and Big John Greer.

NOTE: If you were a member of any vocal group who recorded 50's style group harmony (Doo Wop) records in the 50's or early 60‘s, or if you are related to or know or knew any one who sang with such a group, please send us an email to Lysabe@yahoo.com as we would like to help document the membership of as many vocal groups as possible
==================
This record was pressed in very limited quantities a number of years ago solely for the relatively small Doo Wop collector's Market. Pressings generally did not exceed 500 copies and sometimes were even smaller. With the passing of time (often 35-37 years), the growth in the number of collectors, and the declining number of records available, the value of these records has grown significantly due to the laws of supply and demand. Today, these "reissues" (which were originally intended to make available on a more widespread basis, rare first pressings that had become impossible to find collectors' items) have become very hard to find collectors' items themselves. This may be your last chance to obtain this record at a reasonable price, or at any price at all. As stated above, these records are brand new, dealer or store stock, and have never been played. Sometimes fidelity of recordings may not be up to year 2010 standards, because, it must be remembered, many of these recordings were produced 45-55 (or more) years ago, and may have been reproduced from Masters that were not always in pristine condition. Some of the original masters for the original records themselves were produced on what today some might call primitive equipment, in "studios" that could have included a basement, or garage, as well as a professional studio. But for the true collector that all adds to the magic and honesty of these recordings. In a small number of instances, they may have even been recorded with some surface noise, even though records are brand new. This affects a very limited number of records, and is an accepted part of some of these old recordings. All records are New Dealer or Store Stock and have Never Been played, therefore I cannot tell you anything about surface noise (in the few cases where it exists) or about reversed labels (in the very, very few cases where that occurs.)

Repeat Customers: If you review my eBay Feedback, you will see that most buyers of my records are repeat customers. Some have been buying records from me here on eBay for 10 years.

BATCH MAILINGS: Any successful bidder may request that records from one week’s auctions be held until the following week (if they are bidding in the following week’s auctions), in order to combine mailings and save winning bidders a portion of the S & H fee.

PLEASE READ MY eBay FEEDBACK. Please also check out my other eBay auctions. PLEASE BID ONLY IF YOU INTEND TO HONOR YOUR BID.

POSITIVE FEEDBACK is always posted when appropriate, when your item is mailed or immediately after you post Positive Feedback for me.

Payment is expected within a week of my sending the eBay Invoice (after close of auction.) If I do not hear from you within a week of auction’s closing, you will be sent a reminder thru the eBay "Contact Buyer" procedure. Buyers who do not respond and do not pay, will, usually on the 8th day after closure of the auction, be sent a Payment Reminder by eBay.

ANYONE, may send us an e-mail (LYSABE@yahoo.COM) and request records for our future auctions. We will carefully review all such requests, and where we have a record that has been requested, it will be placed on auction, usually within a week.

Note that if a scan of the item appears below, colors may be slightly off due to the scanning process. In rare instances, there may be a dark blue tint on the scan of the vinyl, and/or white colors may appear yellowed or have a blue tint. For some reason, silver print on a blue background yields a scan that is almost unreadable, but again this only occurs with silver print on a dark blue background such as those on the King or Jubilee labels. In no case is the scan as good as the actual product. Do not use the scan to determine if record is pressed on colored vinyl or if label color is in question. Instead, read the auction description: all records pressed on colored vinyl will be so noted, in the auction description captioned "Condition." In some cases, where we don't have a scan of the actual record on auction, we may substitute another similar looking record, on the same label, only to give you an idea of what the record on auction looks like (e.g., label, print style.) If you have any questions about the appearance of a record, please ask before bidding.
