This is, of course, quite simply, the most important country set from the 1970s, possibly from the last half of the century ... and I am sure that most who know the album would agree. I say that because it was released in ‘71, at a time when the Vietnam War was still raging unabated, there was still a lot of civil strife in our country. The younger, Baby Boom generation was eyeball deep in psychedelic drugs, partially to escape the mess the real world was in, and the so called “generation gap” between them and their War Generation parents threatened to do real damage to the continuation of American life. I was a college kid then, and I can tell you, when this 3LP hit it was a real revelation for many of us. It brought together for the first time some of the best serious country players from the Baby Boomers with some of the truly legendary players from the older set and BOOM ... it clicked, it made a dint, it proved that actually we were all, father and son, on the same wave-length and it showed us that solid, honest-to-God, heartfelt American music could truly, “form a new circle” ... and that is when I, for one, honestly embraced my parents and their music and never looked back. Some of the older generation on the 3 LP set are: Mother Maybelle Carter, Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson, Roy Acuff, Jimmy Martin, Vassar Clements, Brother Oswald and Merle Travis.
