Description
Up for sale is an INCREDIBLY RARE 12 inch, vinyl, 33 RPM LP featuring the great New Orleans-born operatic bass baritone Norman Treigle singing six different popular music songs! It has been stated that this is the ONLY recording ever made of Treigle singing anything outside the operatic and religious genres. This was a private press LP issued in very small quantity.

The history behind this recording was obtained from an online post by AUdubon5425. In May 1954, the New Orleans Summer Pops Association, which had produced summer seasons of concerts for the previous 11 years, folded "for lack of audience support". The fifty musicians in the old group then formed the Crescent City Concert Association (CCCA) with Seymour Sokoloff as president and bass-baritone soloist Norman Treigle as vice-president and soloist consultant. The musicians agreed to be paid based on a percentage of gate receipts. For their first season (presumably 1954), the CCCA needed $ 15,000 to cover expenses for the season. The City of New Orleans contributed $ 5,000 and the remainder came from corporate and private donors. The CCCA pulled off an 8 week season of concerts attended by more than 25,000. As the second season (1955) approached, the CCCA issued this limited edition of 999 LPs which were "not for sale, but reserved exclusively as 'lagniappe' for donors of ten dollars or more toward the CCCA's maintenance".
In 1955, the 28 year old Norman Treigle was near the start of his career. He had studied voice with contralto Elisabeth Wood (beginning in 1946), had made his debut with the New Orleans Opera Association (in 1947, as the Duke of Verona in Romeo et Juliette), and had attended Loyola University of the South's College of Music (between 1949 and 1951). Treigle had made his New York City Opera debut (in 1953, as Colline in La Boheme). However, his breakthrough role (as the Reverend Olin Blitch, in Carlisle Floyd's Susannah) was still a year in the future. Over the next nearly 20 years, Treigle would be widely acclaimed as as the world's leading acting bass baritone who thrilled audiences playing villainous figures, including the devil (in Gounod's Mephistopheles and in Boito's Mefistofele). Sadly, he led a tormented personal and professional life which ultimately led to his death in 1975, age 47, from an overdose of sleeping pills. In 2012, the Plaza in front of New Orleans' Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts was named and dedicated in Treigle's honor.
Treigle's vocal talents shine brightly on one side of this LP. He sings each of the six selections on this side His rendition of "Old Man River" is truly thrilling.
