THE LP HAS THE FIRST ISSUE VERTIGO SWIRL LABELS WITH THE MATRIX: 6360008 1Y//2 ? 420 111 / 6360008 2Y//1 ? 420 112 AND IS HOUSED IN THE ORIGINAL MATTE, DIE-CUT GATEFOLD SLEEVE DESIGNED AND ILLUSTRATED BY ROGER DEAN AND "Printed and made by the E. J. Day Group, London and Bedford"
A TREMENDOUS COPY OF NUCLEUS' DEBUT - A REAL HEAVYWEIGHT CLASSIC AND A LANDMARK LP IN BRITISH JAZZ FUSION. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Line-up/Musicians:
Ian Carr / trumpet, flugelhorn
Karl jenkins / electric piano, oboe, piano, baritone saxophone
Brian Smith / tenor & soprano saxes, flute
Chris Spedding / guitars
Jeff Clyne / bass, electric bass
John Marshall / drums, percussion
When Carr brought together keyboardist/oboist Karl Jenkins, saxophonist/flautist Brian Smith, guitarist Chris Spedding, bassist Jeff Clyne and drummer John Marshall, established musicians all, to record Nucleus' first record, Elastic Rock , one doubts that he could have envisioned the impact the album would have, not only on the British scene, but on the international stage as well. A few short months after recording their first record they won the top award at the Montreux Jazz Festival and found themselves playing at the Village Gate in New York, to an audience who was wondering exactly what it was they were hearing.
From the opening burst of Jenkins' "1916," with its anthemic horn-line supported by Marshall's flurry of activity, it is clear that something new is happening. The album as a whole, while incorporating certain elements of rock rhythms, is a more relaxed affair than what was to come later. If a comparison must be made, then Miles' In a Silent Way is a precedent, although Carr claims not to have heard it at the time of recording, which just continues to reinforce the reality that advances in music come from many sources and usually at the same time. Like In a Silent Way , Carr chose to build side-long continuous suites of music, although there is less reliance on hypnotic groove and more on composed melodies, mostly from the pen of Jenkins, who would write the majority of Nucleus' first two records. And while there are some similarities between the trancelike groove of "Torrid Zone" and "Shhh/Peaceful," there are differences as well. While "Shhh/Peaceful" would rest on a certain ambience for nearly an entire side, "Torrid Zone" would lead into "Stonescape," a more conventional ballad, albeit played with a certain elasticity in time by Marshall. Segueing into "Earth Mother," Jenkins delivers an oboe solo over a group improvisation that, as rocky as it gets, is still relatively subdued compared with their next album, We'll Talk About It Later , which was recorded eight months later in September '70
Highly recommended to fans of British fusion, especially latter-day Soft Machine fans who are interested in seeing what some of the members were doing before they joined SOFT MACHINE
Track Listing:
Side 1: 1916 (1:11) / Elastic Rock (4:05) / Striation (2:15) / Taranaki (1:39) / Twisted Track (5:15) / Crude Blues, Pt. 1 (0:54) / Crude Blues, Pt. 2 (2:36) / 1916- The Battle of Boogaloo (3:04)
Side 2: Torrid Zone (8:40) / Stonescape (2:39) / Earth Mother (0:51) / Speaking for Myself, Personally, in My Own (0:54) / Persephones Jive (2:15)
LABELS: The labels are CLEAN and BRIGHT with NO unwanted marks/writing and only one or two light spindles. THIS COPY HAS HARDLY EVER BEEN PLAYED
VINYL Visual: The vinyl still retains its DEEP, LIKE-NEW, GLOSSY SHEEN and is practically UNMARKED (there is one light mark on Side Two). Visually MINT (Side One) / NR MINT (Side Two)
VINYL Audio: BEAUTIFUL, CRYSTAL CLEAR, VERY SHARP and VERY STRONG audio reproduction. There are NO jumps, NO sticks, NO scratches and barely any click or pops. There a a couple of tiny, tiny patches of interference on "Torrid Zone", not a scratch or a click/pop but brief snippets of surface noise which sound as they are passed over but I did not find them at all intrusive and in the overall context of this STUNNING LP I would personally consider them very minor. Otherwise, the LP plays BEAUTIFULLY THROUGHOUT to an extremely high standard with GREAT CLARITY and must be very strictly graded at least EXCELLENT/EXCELLENT+
TREMENDOUS LP and NOT over-graded in ANY way as I use strict RECORD COLLECTOR grading standards (please refer to my feedback and 'about me' page). BEAUTIFUL COPY OF A SENSATIONAL PIECE OF WORK
SLEEVE: The sleeve is in EXCELLENT condition. The die-cut window is undamaged (just a tiny crease - see pics) and the edges of the sleeve show minimal storage wear. The outer surfaces display some minor rubbing made all the more prominent by the black, untreated nature of the sleeve but the inside of the gatefold is CLEAN, BRIGHT and FRESH. The spine is straight and true with all text CLEAR and BOLD
THE VERTIGO SWIRL BAG IS IN TOP CONDITION WITH NO SPLITS
