Nagisa Nite: "Honto no Sekai". (ORG Records - ORG-015~16) (Disc: Mint/ Fold Out Jacket: Mint). Comes with 4-paged insert and unopened still sealed booklet. Released in 1999 in an edition of 500 copies and since then long gone. Record comes in a beautiful heavy duty fold out cover and is a beautiful item to behold. Heading out of the city of Osaka, Nagisa Nite, which means 'on the beach' in Japanese, is an homage of sorts to Neil Young's 1975 masterpiece. Their acid-psych folk tendencies notwithstanding, Nagisa Nite also did well to take cues from the avant rock world around them at the time, comfortably implementing the minimalist credo 'less is more' throughout this record vanguard of the burgeoning psych-avant-folk movement in Japan. Their contemporaries include Maher Shalal Hash Baz and Naoki Zushi, artists who also have work on the inspirational Osaka-based label Org (founded by Nagisa Nite's Shibayama Shinji). The songs within "Honto no Sekai" bring to mind the very best of sixties' and seventies' psychedelic, progressive and folk rock while steadfastly remaining in the modern by introducing to the mix avant touches ala' Eric Dolphy, Derek Bailey or Robert Wyatt. Soaring Syd Barrett-esque guitar solos abet the colliding forces of heaven and nature. And that is where Shibayama and Takeda reside, either on their way towards or in the process of departing the Garden of Eden. Centered around Shibayama's songs and Takeda's gentle and fragile female vocals, Nagisa Nite brings forth a serene and resolutely unhurried spatial acid folk. Their beatific qualities get at times jet engine injected by abounding climatic guitar solo. They are the perfect band that balances upon the verge of underground hi-fi and lo-fi overground. Truly gorgeous and utterly fragile music that comes as an oases of mind chattering beauty in these times of drumbeats faster than one's own heartbeat. Truly magnificent. Never released outside of Japan and vinyl copies are hard to come by these days. Recommended for fans of Syd Barret, Mahel, Linda Perhacs, Robert Wyatt, Aso Ai, etc. Just splendid.
