V E DAY, May 8 1945, World War II ends in Europe....
A Tribute to V E Day 2012, offered are a Series of historic items associated with WWII
Entartete Musik: Joseph's Goebbel and Hitler's 3rd Reich designation [Degenerate Music] for music written by Jewish and politically dissident composers. ENTER: Ernst Krenek's highly successful Zeitoper, JOHNNY SPIELT AUF.
Showcasing the principal character, Johnny,an African American jazz saxophone player in the late 1920s created an immediate bullseye for the rising National Socialists to target the German Jewish composer, Ernst Krenek, like Kurt Weill... as producers of undesirable, degenerate works, toxic to the German morals and public good.
This is the PREMIERE RECORDING of orchestral highlights. DAJOS BELA and His Concert Orchestra do a classic Period style performance as is expected for this circa 1929 recording. Note, Krenek's music for the Black jazz musician, Johnny has leitmotifs of southern plantation like tunes including Stephen Foster's Swanee and I Dream of Jeannie in a jazzed up stylization. This is an E+ copy of the original German ODEON recording:extremely scarce today.
