Neil Gaiman and Australia's FourPlay String Quartet are pleased to announce their first album together, and Neil's first official album release. Signs of Life will be released on April 28th, 2023 via Instrumental Recordings with cover art by Shaun Tan.
The Neil Gaiman and FourPlay String Quartet collaboration was born in 2010, when Sydney Opera House's Graphic Festival commissioned FourPlay to write a soundtrack to Neil's novella The Truth is a Cave in the Black Mountains for a live performance with him. That collaboration led to an ongoing friendship and creative collaboration, where Neil and FourPlay workshopped the concept of a suite of original works around the concept of the zodiac, with the traditional signs replaced by a new collection of words and objects exploring aspects of life. They called this collaboration Signs. Some of the work on Signs of Life was developed for that project. Nestled alongside these original works are new poems and stories of Neil's crafted with FourPlay's music, two "covers" of songs from Neil's previous projects and an instrumental inspired by Neil's work.
Neil Gaiman is one of the most beloved and celebrated writers of our times. His work transcends genre, age and format; and arcs across novels, television, film, short stories, comic books, radio plays, theatre and more. Recently, his novels Good Omens (co-written with Terry Pratchett) and American Gods have been adapted into TV series for Amazon Prime. His revolutionary and landmark comic series, The Sandman, has been adapted for television by Netflix and Warner Bros. Television and held the #1 spot globally in Netflix streaming for several weeks.
FourPlay String Quartet are an utterly unique proposition in the world of string quartets. Much more of a band than a classical ensemble, FourPlay improvise, jam out ideas and use extended instrumental techniques and effects to create startlingly original sounds. Initially gaining worldwide fame for their interpretations of music from artists such as Metallica, The Strokes, Radiohead, The Beastie Boys and Charles Mingus, FourPlay then focused on developing their own original repertoire and hybrid media collaborations and projects.
