Any YOUNG fans out there? How's the search for 'Gold Rush' going? An Absolute pain in the derriere to find a really good one - that I can assure you. For starters I don't think it was a massive seller to begin with - a bit of sleeper hit in the UK, perhaps. So, true 1st copies are not quite as abundant as, say, the Beatles are. But the really tricky thing is finding a truly low-mileage copy. Because those who like Young PLAY Young. And GR has some incredibly fussy tracks which will start to deteriorate even after light use. Finding a truly breath taking copy - is extremely unusual. First things first.. How do we know it really is a true 1st? Well, it's very heavy-set pressing [more akin to 60's stock than 70's]. Matrix A1/B1 - 1st cut. It is laughable how many copies I can see on-line that are nowhere near even close to being 1970 1st. But the most obvious indicator of 1st issue is - THE ORIGINAL catalogue number and NO REFERENCE to the later Kinney re-cataloguing which occurred in 1972. Both labels mention the original catalogue number, and the re-catalogued numbers  [K44XXX] are totally absent. Beyond this there's a further indicator for absolute 1st press. The very 1st labels did not mention "warner brother USA recording" - ALL further copies would mention this. So, there you have it...the list is long.... BUT this will guarantee you absolute 1st 1970 copy. But then we still have to verify 1st issue on the cover! The 1st covers are lovely thick-card and DO NOT make any mention of the new catalogue number sequence or a 1972 copyright reissue date on the rear. The front is glued shut leaving a very nice rigid front panel. The cover is unlaminated as was the norm for 1st issue. We also have a genuine 1970 poly-lined inner sleeve. My hunch is the lyric poster is either later re-issue or facsimile [it doesn't feel original to me].
Vinyl (Ex/Ex+) Well, never seen one that looks as good as this copy does. Surfaces are shiny like mirrors - tilt it into the light and there's that shimmer given off by only very lowly used grooves. Barely a mark either side - absolutely nothing remotely troublesome. I can honestly say that playing this record was like hearing GR for the 1st time. Because I've never really witnessed a properly low-mileage clean player. And the result is truly marvelous. You are so close to the original masters and all that depth and detail is literally washing out the speakers. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a mostly EXCELLENT+ level of playback with minor deviation in a couple of spots. And all with hardly a peep of background interference. It is not utterly perfect. I can detect just a touch of faintest evidence of static presence in BIRDS. But I'm being extremely picky - and it is very very low in the mix. I've still never heard this track this good before. Other than that you should only be able to pick out a very occasional and isolated crackle. But by and large this is EASILY the best looking and cleanest darn copy I've ever got my mitts on. A collector copy to keep and treasure. As close to FINAL UPGRADE as you can realistically find.
Cover (Ex) So, we've established it is a proper 1st. But it is also worth mentioning that unlaminated covers are a total pain to find without surface wear. But this example is remarkable for having almost no surface wear to speak of [highly unusual]. That goes for back and front. Surfaces are flat and uncreased. The interior is perfect - totally flat and lovely and smooth [no signs of foxing or anything hidden]. Edge wear is very slight for this title and the openings still sharpish. The spine looks great with very little wear at all. The text is 99% legible. Overall the cover retains excellent rigidity in part thanks to the heavy card employed in manufacture. SWEET!
Inner (Vg+) Light ageing. Poly-bag still present. No splits.
Lyric Poster (Ex) Perfect. But remember the poster is likely to be a replica.
