Description

NEIL YOUNG - 'NEIL YOUNG'

Released on November 12, 1968 (Young's 23rd birthday) initial pressings of this album contained a unique mix which employed the "Haeco-CSG" encoding system. This was the "Holzer Audio Engineering-Compatible Stereo Generator", an analog electronic device and method developed by Howard Holzer, Chief Engineer at A&M Records in Hollywood, California. It was designed to create stereophonic vinyl LP records that when played on monaural equipment would allow the 2 channel stereo mix to automatically "fold-down" properly to a single monaural channel. However it had the unfortunate side effect of degrading the sound in both stereo and mono.

Young was unhappy with the sound quality of this first release, so the album was partially remixed in January 1969 and then re-released without Haeco-CSG processing. In fact, just three songs that were remixed: "Here We Are In The Years", "What Did You Do To My Life" & "If I Could Have Her Tonight", and "Here We Are In The Years" which has the noticeable difference in track length. The remixed cut is easily identifiable as the matrix included the suffix 'RE'. This copy contains the ORIGINAL MIX.

Labels: NEAR MINT

An immaculate pair with just two tiny, faint spindle marks around the side 1 centre hole only.

Visual: EXCELLENT +

Pristine, deep-gloss playing surfaces with no dulling or clouding to any area. Both sides shine 'as new' in strong daylight with the only visual blemishes being a single non-feelable 5cm stylus hairline on side 2 and two tiny non-feelable marks on 1 - none of which affect the sound or play. Closer examination directly beneath my powerful and unforgiving halogen desk lamp reveals no further marks or wear and both sides lie 100% flat on the turntable when playing.

Sound Quality: NEAR MINT

Flawless and wonderful sound quality from this barely, if ever played early copy. My single careful play-check at volume detected absolutely no trace of any groove/playwear distortion or any background noise or interference on or between any of these magnificent tracks. The entire album is also free from any clicks, pops or any other such distractions. You will not find a better sounding copy of this classic.

Cover: EXCELLENT

This early example has been carefully stored within a clean, non-smoking environment and retains a vibrant, unfaded front panel which bears just minor storage rubbing. There are small shelfwear bumps to the corners but none are split or excessively worn. Both opening edges of the open left pocket are undamaged.

The inside of the gatefold is pristine with no damage or wear to any part as is the exposed rear panel.

There is a 7cm lower seam split and 3cm upper seam stress to the rear pocket, but the spine text is clear & readable.

Inner-sleeve: EXCELLENT

Clean & flat with small splits to the seams but no tears or writing.
