Description
Mostly I collect and occasionally sell souvenir records of industrial musicals. (See my other items for sale if you're not sure what I'm talking about.) But along the way I often happen to acquire other strange records, and occasionally I like to re-home a few.
This 1986 oddity was put out by the New York Lottery. Already pretty weird conceptually. Most of the record is versions of well-known New York songs: "New York, New York," "Lullaby of Broadway," "Take the 'A' Train," "Shuffle Off to Buffalo," "The Erie Canal," to name a few. Fine, but so what.
Luckily there's one track on this record that elevates it to a higher level of conceptual fun as a listening experience. Steve DePass, "America's Singing Poet," wrote and performed a song called "Lottery Song: It's a Fun Game" that kicks off side 2. This is what made it onto an installment of "Dave's Record Collection" years ago when I was a writer on the Letterman show and gathering weird vinyl for that long-running segment.
"It's a fun game, a fun game, the Lottery is the number one game! Here in New York State we appreciate participating in the Lottery, you and me..."
That was typed out from my 1990's memory. Maybe I'll play the record to see if I got the lyric exactly right. Maybe not.
Steve DePass, incidentally, is an interesting guy if you look him up. Nerd alert: I happen to know he did an IBM industrial show in Bermuda.
So, a weird 80's artifact from right before vinyl stopped being a thing (temporarily), with a bunch of very nice "regular" songs and one "special" song. And this copy is quite minty, still in shrink wrap, and the disc looks unplayed. So far.
