ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This fascinating and rare LP from Colosseum (SM 503, German pressing, stereo) features the features the enigmatic Elly Ney in an all-Beethoven program, recorded in stereo in 1962.
Ney’s exact Beethoven program is as follows:
Piano Sonata No. 21 in C Major Op. 53 “Waldstein”
32 Variations for Piano on an Original Theme in C minor WoO 80
6 Variations for Piano on an Original Theme in F Major Op. 34
These were among her last recordings, set down shortly before her death later that year. A Leschetizky pupil and something of a Beethoven specialist, Ney’s interpretations of the music with which she was most closely associated were never less than individual. Today, she retains only, perhaps, a certain curiosity value, but her musical legacy warrants re-assesment. In her day, and particularly before the Second World War, she was greatly esteemed, and were it not for her Nazi ties, her recordings for DG might find issue in the Yellow Label’s Original Masters series. As it is, preservation of her artistry has largely fallen to specialty labels, such as Biddulph, Pearl, and more recently, an extensive re-issue series undertaken by the latter-day Colosseum label. In any case, although Elly Ney continues to divide opinion, her long and varied discography awaits re-discovery and reassessment.
Incidentally, there are liner notes, uncredited, on the reverse side of the jacket, provided in both German only and English.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is some edgewear, more so at corners, and some slight ringwear, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, or owners' markings and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and attractive in appearance – overall, an excellent collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT and the playback is superb – overall, a truly fine collector’s copy.
