This is an excellent collection for die-hard fans only (those new to Nick Cave should track down his Best Of as it is a much better starting point than this monolithic compilation). For Nick Cave fans who have not heard his B-Sides it is simply enough to say that they are by far some of his best work, most eclipsing many album tracks. The same goes for the various other recordings he's put out alone and with the Seeds for various soundtracks, tribute albums and guest appearences on friends albums.

The Boatman's Call outtakes are a batch of songs recorded for said album but scrapped, probably due to album length restraints. The versions here are excellent and often surpass the material that did make the cut.

The Die Haut album is also a nice addition to any Nick Cave collection, as it features Cave on guest vocals on most of the album tracks from Thomas Wydler's band's album "Burning The Ice."

The real meat of this amalgamation is in the 30 live concerts though, and these certainly deliver. Some of Nick's best moments recorded to tape are not on the albums, but within these shows. Virtually every incarnation of the band is represented here from the "From Her To Eternity" DEBUT show onward all the way to last years "Nocturama" touring. Roughly from December 1983 to February 2004. This means that almost every song from the bands catalogue gets the live treatment somewhere along the road. The sound quality ranges from somewhat rough to suberb, many of the recordings eclipsing "Live Seeds" in quality. But even the rougher recordings (mostly the post 2001 stuff) sound good and often a less than perfect capture can add to the sound. None of these are of poor quality.

The solo shows included are probably the biggest incentive for you to bid on this item, because anyone who enjoys Nick Cave, and has not heard these, will surely fall in love with them. These consist of recordings Nick did a few years ago during a tour of the US. Nick played piano and was backed by the Dirty Three, reworking all of these songs, slowing them down and rewriting much of the music. The versions of Papa Won't Leave You Henry and Stagger Lee on the solo bootlegs are a steal at any price.

In 1998, Nick taught a class on writing songs in Vienna, part of his lectures here made it onto the official release "The Secret Life of the Love Song" but included on this DVD is the full original lecture.

I will finally add that some of the radio recordings demand attention, particularly the Mark Radcliffe recording. The sound is crisp and clear, the band is in fine form, Nick's banter with the host is hilarious and most importantly, it includes the only version I've seen of O'Malley's Bar live, split into three acts with different lyrics. This is the best recording of any song on this DVD.
