Description

Nick Drake - Bryter Layter

I am pleased to offer for sale this exceptional copy of Nick Drake's second and penultimate studio album, Bryter Layter.

Following on from his debut LP, Bryter Layter combines Drake's superb writing and vocals with arrangements performed by established session musicians to produce a complete and edifying sound. Although not particularly commercially successful at the time, the album received a good critical response and has since grown a following amongst the modern folk scene.

This particular copy is a lovely example of a true UK first pressing and would make a fantastic condition to any record collection.

Album Details:

Serial number: ILPS-9134

Matrix number: A 1U / B 1U

Mother & stamper codes: 1 2 9 8 / 1 1 1 1

The matrix numbers inform us that the vinyl is a true UK first pressing. In addition, the vinyl was produced from the first production mother plates and very early stamper plates. Consequently, the audio reproduction is simply fantastic. Take a listen yourself below.

The labels are the first variant pink rim Island labels with palm tree Island logo.

The non-laminated is the first variant manufactured by E. J. Day & co

Completing the album is the original 'plastic bags can be dangerous' polythene lined, die-cut inner sleeve.

Condition Report:

The condition report provided below is given as a guide only. I include high-quality, comprehensive photographs as well as a complete audio recording in my listings to enable you to make an informed decision on the condition of this record yourself.

Vinyl: EXCELLENT -

Labels: EXCELLENT

The labels are bright, clean and without writing. Only minor spindle wear is visible.

Visual: VERY GOOD +

The record retains superb deep-gloss playing surfaces. In bright daylight a small number of surface marks are visible including a small, 1/4 turn, section of groove wear on Track 5 Side 1 - 'Hazey Jane'. Other than this, none can be felt. Under the glare of a halogen desk lamp wispy paper hairline marks can be seen alongside an iridescent rainbow sheen.

Sound Quality: EXCELLENT -

Please use the eBay internet site to enjoy the audio clips. The eBay app does not facilitate playback.

Side 1:

Side 2:

As can be heard in the audio clips, the vinyl sounds great. There is great channel separation, superb clarity and exceptional dynamism. The groove wear mentioned previously is audible for approximately 3 seconds. Other than this, the album plays through beautifully. Some may grade VG+ but as the section is so short and the rest of the vinyl plays so well I think EX- is accurate. Have a listen and make your own mind up, though.

Sleeve: EXCELLENT -

The original sleeve looks superb! Both the front and back are clear with only subtle light bleaching to the top edge. Otherwise, the cover art is vibrant. The spine and all edges show only minor storage wear. The corners are strong but do show subtle softening. A great example.

Inner Sleeves: EXCELLENT

The original inner sleeve is in great condition.

Additional Details:

Before the audio test was performed the vinyl was cleaned first by an Okki Nokki vacuum cleaner (using L'art du Son cleaning solution) and then an Audio Desk ultrasonic cleaner.

After cleaning, the vinyl is housed inside a brand new mobile fidelity anti-static inner sleeve.

The vinyl will be packaged outside of the sleeve, both of which are stored inside an archival quality polypropylene outer sleeve.

The record will be sent via an insured courier in a padded vinyl mailer.

Please see my other listings for more Island and proggy rarities.

Bidders with less than ten feedback please get in touch before bidding otherwise your bid will be removed.
